Jets Make Final Call on HC Aaron Glenn’s Job Status

As expected, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn isn’t going anywhere.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter provided an emphatic update on Sunday, January 4, on Sunday NFL Countdown.

“Despite the failures, despite the struggles, they’re committed to Aaron Glenn. He is going to be back in 2026. Amazing, we are talking about Mike McDaniel and Sean McDermott, and Aaron Glenn may be the most safe one of all of them inside the AFC East on the worst team in the division,” Schefter said.

“The Jets have been a disaster down the stretch. They have lost their last four games in the month of December by a total of 107 points. No team ever has lost by that many points in the month of December. The New York Jets have a chance today to not intercept a pass. There has never been a team in the National Football League since the statistics started being kept in 1933 that hasn’t intercepted a pass over a full season. Whether it’s [12 games], 14 games, 16 games, or 17 games. The Jets could make that history,” Schefter explained.

Other Insiders Concur: AG Is Safe With the Jets

NFL Insider Jay Glazer said on NFL on FOX that Glenn is “safe” ahead of Black Monday. He also listed Zac Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals and Shane Steichen of the Indianapolis Colts in that same “safe” category.

NFL Network Insider Judy Battista said on NFL GameDay Morning that the Jets “are not one of the teams expected to make a big move tomorrow. Team Owner Woody Johnson remains committed to Aaron Glenn as his head coach. I was told last night [that] there is no wavering, there has never really been any wavering from Woody Johnson.”

“Not really a surprise. Once the Jets traded Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams at the trade deadline, it was clear that everybody was turning their attention to 2026 … There is some optimism that they can execute a pretty dramatic overhaul. They’re expected to be flush with cap space, and of course, because of those trades, they’ve got two first-rounders this year and three first-rounders next year. So they have plenty of capital to remake that quarterback room, fill some of the roster holes, and expect staff changes from Aaron Glenn,” Battista added.

If Reports Are True, Jets Are Making the Right Choice

During the 2024 offseason, head coach Robert Saleh was deemed safe. However, five games into the season, he was fired by Mr. Johnson.

If Woody didn’t believe in Saleh, a mid-season firing would indicate he didn’t, then they should have pulled the plug after 2023. You might as well rip the band-aid off as opposed to being halfway in.

By these reports, Mr. Johnson has backed Coach Glenn and hasn’t wavered on that stance. If that is true, the Jets have made the right choice.

The Jets need continuity. If Mr. Johnson believes in the plan and is backing AG, then that should provide plenty of confidence to Coach Glenn.

Now he has to execute his plan to turn this team around this offseason. If he doesn’t, Coach Glenn could be looking for a job in 2027.
