In terms of rough years as an NFL coach, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo has had one for the ages.
While Patullo got the benefit of the doubt after he replaced current New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore following a Super Bowl win last February, the patience with Patullo seemed to wear off by about halftime of a Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Things reached a peak when Patullo’s house was vandalized following a Week 13 loss to the Chicago Bears, although that’s done little to slow down the calls for him to be replaced.
With a stunning development on Tuesday, January 6, when the Washington Commanders decided to part ways with celebrated offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, it didn’t take long before speculation began over what Kingsbury might do if he were put in charge of Philadelphia’s offense.
With Patullo running thing, the Eagles finished 24th in the NFL in team offense just one season after finishing eighth and featuring the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in running back Saquon Barkley, who became just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season.
“Had my criticisms of Kingsbury’s offense but hard to imagine they find someone better suited to tailor a system around Jayden Daniels,” The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen wrote on X. “Philly would be a great landing spot for him. I have a feeling are going to try to turn Daniels into a Shanahan system QB and we’ll see how that works out.”
Patullo’s Offense Has Been Hard to Watch
Anyone who has bothered to tune in to watch the Eagles this season understands the absolute Clockwork Orange-level torture it’s been to peel open your eyelids week after week and watch Patullo stumble through calling plays.
While Kingsbury had the built-in excuse of injuries this year with his 2 best offensive players, quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin, out for most of the year with injuries, no such excuse exists for Patullo. He simply seems clueless.
“Biggest concern for Eagles going into the playoffs is Kevin Patullo and the play calling,” Roll Philly Tide wrote on X.
“I think the Eagles best strategy yesterday would have been to rest Kevin Patullo,” Eagles fan Glenn Macnow wrote on X.
“Kevin Patullo asked Tanner McKee to throw 40 passes in a game they led pretty much throughout,” The Sports Bash host Mike Gill wrote on X. “That’s what bothers me more than sitting guys. Malpractice.”
Commanders, Kingsbury at Odds Over Offense
Kingsbury might not even be available for hire once the Eagles finish their season — he was already scheduled for head coach interviews with the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans.
The reaction by the Commanders’ players to his exit was telling.
“Sources: My understanding is that key Commanders offensive players, including QB Jayden Daniels, are disappointed with the team’s decision to part ways with OC Kliff Kingsbury,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz wrote on X. “Daniels vouched for him to stay in his presser on Monday and was among those blindsided by the move.”
