Eagles Not Interested in Reuniting With Super Bowl Champion: Report

Essentially Sports' Tony Pauline reported the Philadelphia Eagles are not interested in bringing back guard Mekhi Becton.

Offensive lineman Mekhi Becton rectified his career while playing one season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. Becton could turn to the team to save his career again if the Los Angeles Chargers release him this offseason, which pundits expect to happen.

But the Eagles don’t appear to be on board with a Becton reunion.

That’s what Essentially Sports’ Tony Pauline reported Wednesday at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.

Pauline wrote the Eagles see warning signs around the veteran lineman. One of the biggest is the fact he has changed representation since leaving the Eagles.

“During Shrine Bowl week, I was told that Becton has returned to many of his former ways, including firing the agency that helped get his game back on track, and that has raised red flags with the Philadelphia Eagles,” Pauline wrote. “The Eagles were surprised (if not shocked) and disappointed by the turn of events.

“The fact that the Eagles parted ways with offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland also has people here at the combine believing a potential reunion between Becton and Philadelphia is a reach at this point.”

In Becton’s lone season with the Eagles, he started 15 games at right guard. That was his first NFL season primarily playing guard instead of tackle.

Becton helped pave the way for running back Saquon Barkley’s historic 2,000-yard rushing season. The Eagles also capped off the 2024 campaign with a dominating Super Bowl victory.

Eagles Not Planning to Pursue Mekhi Becton: Report

Becton’s short tenure with the Eagles and move to guard resulted in him landing a two-year, $20 million deal with the Chargers. But he regressed in 2025, and with a $12.2 million 2026 cap hit, Becton is a cut candidate this offseason.

The Chargers could save nearly $10 million against the cap with a Becton release.

Should that happen, Philadelphia is the most natural place for Becton to play for next year. That’s where he’s had his most successful season since his rookie campaign.

But it’s pretty clear that’s not going to happen. The Eagles appear concerned Becton won’t be able to return to his 2024 form.

It doesn’t help matters for the Eagles that their successful offensive line coach, Jeff Stoutland, who helped so many linemen, including Becton, over the years has departed.

That doesn’t mean the Eagles don’t have confidence in new line coach Chris Kuper. He just doesn’t have a previous relationship with Becton.

Becton’s Roller Coaster NFL Career

The 26-year-old arrived with the New York Jets as a massive first-round pick. The Jets selected Becton at No. 11 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The pick seemed justified, as Becton had a strong rookie season.

But in 2021, Becton suffered a knee injury in Week 1. He missed all but one game and then didn’t play in 2022 either.

Upon returning during 2023, Becton wasn’t the same player. Despite starting 16 games in 2023, the Jets didn’t re-sign the lineman.

However, he reached free agency as an intriguing project because of his 6-foot-7 and 363-pound frame. So, the Eagles rolled the dice on a 1-year contract and moved Becton inside to guard.

The plan couldn’t have worked any better. But again, it doesn’t appear the Eagles are willing to take the same risk in 2026.
