The Philadelphia Eagles have caught some heat over the past few years due to the tush push. While the tush push is nearly impossible to stop, there’s a lot more that goes into it than the Eagles putting Jalen Hurts under center and him being stronger than any other quarterback in the NFL.
That was shown on Sunday during the Eagles‘ impressive win against an excellent Tampa Bay Buccaneers team. Instead of running the typical tush push, the Eagles got creative, with Hurts allowing Saquon Barkley to take the ball on a play that caught the Buccaneers off guard.
“Great call by KP [offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo],” Barkley said. “It’s an answer that we have, and it’s definitely going to put teams on … teams are aware of it too now.”
That was the second time in the game that the Eagles got creative, and from the sound of things, it was a play in the works.
“It’s an exciting play. Makes it pretty exciting, right?” said coach Nick Sirianni, per ESPN.
“It seems like fans like the play,” Sirianni said, “and it was pretty exciting today to get a touchdown pass off it, or two runs that come off of it, to make that play what it is.”
Eagles Have Fun With New Tush Push Play
Barkley wasn’t the only Philadelphia Eagles player to have some fun with a fake tush push on Sunday. While the formation was a bit different, the Eagles allowed tight end Dallas Goedert to enjoy a trick play, too.
“I was really happy we got it called,” Goedert said. “I think we put it in about four years ago, maybe five, when the staff first got here, and it worked to perfection.”
Former Eagles Star Backs Tush Push
The tush push will continue to be in the light for the Philadelphia Eagles. If Sirianni and the offense get creative with it like they did on Sunday, there will be even more concerns. However, it’s a football play, and one that teams ultimately will have to try to stop.
Some players have spoken out on the play, while current and former players are all for it. That includes Eagles legend Nick Foles, who said Philadelphia puts a tremendous amount of work into ensuring the play is executed correctly.
“I’m pro tush push. Being there, I know the quality of offensive line coach they have in Jeff Stoutland, I know the quality of offensive linemen that they have and how they’re taught and the little details that make the play what it is,” Foles told Fox News Digital in a recent interview.
