If the Pittsburgh Steelers want to consider a reunion with a massive body along the defensive front, Brodric Martin is now available.
Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders reported Thursday the Las Vegas Raiders waived Martin from their roster. Martin’s release came with the defensive lineman injured.
The Raiders moved on from Martin about five months after claiming the defensive lineman off waivers. The Steelers released Martin in December.
The 6-foot-5, 330-pound defensive lineman spent six weeks in Pittsburgh during the 2025 campaign. The Steelers poached Martin off the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad in early November.
Martin appeared in one game for the Steelers. He didn’t record a statistic while playing 10 defensive snaps. Martin also had two snaps on special teams.
The Detroit Lions drafted Martin at No. 96 overall in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In six NFL games, he has registered four combined tackles.
Raiders Release Defensive Lineman Brodric Martin
Some NFL draft analysts didn’t hold Martin in very high regard during the 2023 draft process. With that in mind, it’s not super surprising he’s struggled to earn a helmet on game days in the league.
The Lions believed in him, though, enough to draft Martin three rounds ahead of NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein projection.
Zierlein loved Martin’s size but questioned whether the defensive lineman had the technique to use it properly.
“Space-eating nose tackle for consideration in both odd and even fronts. Martin’s size and length will be coveted by NFL teams, but his impact on games can be blunted at times due to a lack of leverage to hold his anchor,” wrote Zierlein. “If he can play with a little better bend and quicker hands, he has the awareness and ability to handle two-gapping duties.
“He can take on double teams with better technique and more work. Martin’s traits and talent create Day 3 draft value as a rotational interior lineman.”
After two seasons with the Lions, Detroit waived Martin last August. The Chiefs then signed the defensive lineman to their first 2025 practice squad.
With an opportunity to add him to their active roster, the Steelers signed Martin from Kansas City. But he didn’t do enough to stay with the organization long term.
Martin played for North Alabama and Western Kentucky during his college career. In two seasons at Western Kentucky, he had 62 combined tackles, including six for loss and four sacks.
Steelers Defensive Line Depth Entering 2026
With Martin available in free agency, it will be interesting to see if the Steelers pursue the massive defensive lineman again.
But the Steelers have already built strong defensive line depth this offseason.
Cameron Heyward, Keeanu Benton and Derrick Harmon will return as the team’s starting linemen on defense. Free agent signing Sebastian Joseph-Day and 2025 fifth-round pick Yahya Black should have significant roles this fall too.
For veteran depth, the Steelers also brought back defensive linemen Esezi Otomewo, Logan Lee, Anthony Goodlow and Kyler Baugh. To add even more depth to the line, the Steelers also signed free agent Jahvaree Ritzie and undrafted free agent Kevin Jobity Jr.
In the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the team also added defensive end Gabe Rubio.
More than likely, that means Martin won’t be receiving an opportunity from the Steelers soon. But a return shouldn’t be ruled out, especially if Pittsburgh experiences a rash of defensive line injuries this summer.
