Steelers Legend Could Prompt Team to Draft 1,000-Yard WR: Report

The Pittsburgh Steelers have done a lot of work in the wide receiver room over the last year. After trading away former 1,000-yard receiver George Pickens and trading for two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh made another trade this offseason to combat multiple free-agent losses. It was able to acquire two-time 1,000-yard pass-catcher Michael Pittman Jr.

However, the team may not be done adding wide receiver help this offseason. According to insider Mark Kaboly, the Steelers may not pass up on Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson if he is available at pick No. 21.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Could Use the Hines Ward Connection

Hines Ward

Hines Ward spent all 14 of his NFL seasons with the Steelers.

Here is what Kaboly wrote earlier this week about why the Steelers might be interested in drafting Tyson with their first-round pick:

“Tyson was coached at ASU by former Steelers great wide receiver Hines Ward and has a similar style to Ward. Tyson doesn’t have elite speed, but is fast enough, gritty enough, and versatile enough to interest the wide receiver-needy Steelers.”

Ward was named the Arizona State wide receivers coach in 2024 and spent two seasons coaching Tyson. The four-time Pro-Bowler was drafted by the Steelers out of Georgia in the third round in 1998. He would go on to become the franchise’s all-time leading receiver in receptions (1,000), receiving yards (12,083), and touchdown catches (85). So, it makes sense that the Steelers would be interested in drafting a player who was mentored by their greatest pass-catcher in history. The two-time Super Bowl champion has a chance to leave another footprint on the organization.

Jordyn Tyson Could Be the Perfect Draft Pick for the Steelers

The Steelers would be wise to take a chance on a player like Tyson. Despite having an injury history, Tyson has been the Sun Devils’ leading receiver each of the last two seasons. Specifically, his 2024 season was the best of his collegiate career. That year, he was the only Big 12 wide receiver to record at least 75 receptions, 1,000 receiving yards, 14.0 yards per catch, and 10 or more touchdown catches.

Despite not being as tall as Metcalf or Pittman, Tyson (6’2″) could very well be the perfect complement to both of them. His history of production and ability to line up anywhere on the field could help the Steelers’ offense reach new heights in 2026 under head coach Mike McCarthy.

Remember, the Steelers were able to make the playoffs last season despite performing as a bottom-third unit on both offense and defense. In fact, they won their first division title in five years. If this offense can take any sort of step forward, perhaps the team isn’t that far off from contending for a Super Bowl. Of course, a lot will depend on whether or not the team can bring back legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. After recording 25 total touchdowns and posting a solid passer rating of 94.8 in 2025, he could be the key to the team going on a deep playoff run.
