Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed a question about his future following the team's 30-6 playoff loss to the Houston Texans on Monday.

After 19 seasons, Mike Tomlin decided to walk away from the only head coaching job he ever held in the NFL. And now, many believe he could be done for good.

Tomlin stepped down following the Steelers’ ugly 30-6 Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans, according to ESPN.

“You deserve better, and right now I can’t deliver,” Tomlin said, per one high-ranking team source that told ESPN.

“Someone else has to move the franchise forward,” another team source recalled Tomlin saying.

Tomlin addressed his decision shortly after it became public.

“This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team,” Tomlin said. “I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I am also thankful to the players who gave everything they had every day, and to the coaches and staff whose commitment and dedication made this journey so meaningful.”

While many around the league believed Tomlin’s departure was possible, it still came as a shock. What’s more surprising is the belief that he may never return to the sidelines at all.

That’s the view of Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, who says he had known about Tomlin’s plans long before the announcement.

“I think he’s done,” Glazer said on the Nightcap podcast with Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson during Super Bowl LX week. “He told me and Ronde Barber two years ago. He was like, ‘Hey, this is my plan. You can’t say this. Don’t show my hand. I’m telling you, you’re my guy.’”

Jay Glazer Knew Mike Tomlin’s Retirement Timeline

Glazer said he originally believed Tomlin would step away after the 2024 season.

“Last year, I thought he was going to hang it up,” Glazer said. “He decided one more. I thought he was gonna be done. So until it happens, it happens. But this year, kind of Week 8, I’m like, ‘Hey man, anybody that’s gonna change your mind?’ ‘Nope.’”

At the time, the Steelers were coming off a 35-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers, on a two-game skid, and had dropped to 4-3.

“I said, ‘Can I report it the last week?’ ‘Nope,’” Glazer added. “But in fairness, he said, ‘I don’t think it’s fair if my players find out from you.’”

Glazer’s decision to stay quiet on what would have been a massive story speaks to why he remains one of the most trusted insiders in the NFL.

Mike Tomlin Would Join Rare Steelers Company

If Tomlin never returns to coaching, his exit would mirror that of his predecessors in Pittsburgh.

Like Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher, Tomlin would leave the Steelers as a Super Bowl-winning head coach with a long tenure — and never coach another team.

His legacy is defined not just by won championships, but by consistency. Tomlin never posted a losing season during his entire 19 years in Pittsburgh.

If he is indeed finished, Tomlin will retire with a 193-114-2 record, an 8-12 playoff mark, two Super Bowl appearances and one Lombardi Trophy.
