The San Francisco 49ers have come very close to winning a Super Bowl over the past decade, but they have been unable to find their way back to the top of the mountain since their most recent championship in 1994. However, the Niners have a solid roster heading into the new season, and if they can stay healthy, they will be one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
The 49ers dynasty that stretched through most of the 1980s and into the early 1990s captivated fans in the San Francisco area. On Tuesday, the team and its fanbase were dealt some tough news regarding one of the members of their 1981 championship team, as it was announced that former All-Pro tight end Charle Young had died at the age of 75.

Young initially broke into the pros with the Philadelphia Eagles as the No. 6 overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft. He quickly turned himself into one of the best players at his position in the league, as he rattled off three straight Pro Bowl selections to begin his career. The best year of Young’s career ended up being his first, as he earned All-Pro First Team honors as a rookie after he caught 55 passes for 854 yards and six touchdowns.
After spending the first four years of his career with the Eagles, Young would finish off his career by spending three years apiece with the Los Angeles Rams, 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks. It was with the Niners, though, where Young managed to experience the most postseason success of his career, as he helped the team win its first ever Super Bowl championship in 1981.
Throughout his career, Young was a reliable pass catcher who could also hold his own as an extra blocker. Since retiring, Young has largely remained out of the spotlight, but he is still remembered fondly for his contributions to the 49ers during his three-year stint with the team. After news of Young’s passing came to light, San Fran issued a brief statement on social media.
“The 49ers mourn the passing of former TE Charle Young. Our organization sends its deepest condolences to the Young family and friends,” the team said in a post on its official X account.

Young was a sneaky important contributor for the 49ers during his time in town, particularly in 1981, as he caught 37 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns. He wasn’t always the focal point of the team’s offensive game plan, but when he got involved, that typically meant good things were happening for his team.
Young’s passing is undoubtedly tragic, but it also serves as a reminder of the championship pedigree that the 49ers have become renowned for. They may have had the sort of postseason success they were hoping for in the past few years, but the 2026 campaign is as good a time as ever for the team to change their fortunes and bring another championship to San Francisco.
