Mitchell remains the clear No. 2 running back for San Francisco, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Lombardi notes that the Niners have a history of trading backup running backs (Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson) when they're happy with their depth at the position. That could be an option this summer, though it's not necessarily likely, with Mitchell in the final year of his contract and a pair of rookies (fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo, UDFA Cody Schrader) getting work at minicamp. The 49ers also have returning veteran Jordan Mason, but he's mostly played special teams and has never managed to move above Mitchell on the depth chart when Mitchell's been healthy. The long-term plan probably entails Guerendo taking over as the No. 2 RB behind Christian McCaffrey, but Mitchell looks on track to handle the role again this season.

Latest 49ers News
Elijah Mitchell : Still the No. 2 back
Mitchell remains the clear No.
Tayler Hawkins : Back at minicamp
Hawkins (wrist) was spotted participating throughout San Francisco's minicamp sessions. The 26-year-old safety out of San Diego State seems to be past the wrist injury that he sustained towards the end of the 49ers' 2023 campaign. Hawkins appeared in one game last season, recording four total tackles and nabbing one interception. He's expected to compete for a depth role in San Francisco's secondary as the offseason continues.
Cameron Latu : Progressing as planned
Latu (knee) has suffered no setbacks in his recovery and is expected to be ready for training camp, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Latu suffered a meniscus injury during a preseason game last year and missed the entirety of his rookie campaign. A third-round selection in the 2023 Draft, Latu will likely be competing with veteran Eric Saubert for the 49ers No. 3 spot on the team's depth chart at tight end behind George Kittle (groin) and the newly acquired, Logan Thomas.
Brandon Aiyuk : Holding out from minicamp
Aiyuk is not present at 49ers minicamp this week as he seeks a new contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. This was expected after Aiyuk didn't report for voluntary OTAs following an offseason full of trade speculation. Aiyuk ultimately wasn't traded, and the two sides have reportedly engaged in dialogue regarding a new deal, though nothing has seemed to advance further than the talking stage. Aiyuk is currently set to collect a $14.124 million salary in 2024, the final year of his rookie deal. He's one of the many receivers around the league set to be paid handsomely. It's unclear if San Francisco plans to meet his demands.
Christian McCaffrey : Lands two-year, $38M extension
The 49ers signed McCaffrey to a two-year, $38 million contract extension Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. CMC's deal was set to run through 2025, and he's getting an additional $8 million up front before this two-year extension kicks in and runs through 2027. The $19 million annual average makes McCaffrey the NFL's highest-paid running back, a distinction he'd already held at just over $16 million per year. This further sets him apart from Alvin Kamara ($15 million) and Jonathan Taylor ($14 million) at the top of the position. McCaffrey was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year last season and finished third in MVP voting after finishing with 2,023 total yards and 21 touchdowns across 16 regular-season contests. McCaffrey turns 28 years old later this week.
Isaac Yiadom : Might play third corner role
Yiadom is seen as a strong third corner option by the 49ers, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The seventh-year pro signed with San Francisco in March after playing the last two seasons with New Orleans. In 2023, Yiadom played in all 17 games and recorded 37 tackles and a career-high 14 passes defensed.
Logan Thomas : In line to sign with 49ers
The 49ers are slated to sign Thomas to a contract, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. A quarterback in college, Thomas has come into his own as a tight end the past four seasons with Washington, hauling in 72 passes in 2020 and 55 last year. Overall, he averaged 9.2 YPC and 6.1 YPT and scored 14 touchdowns on 274 targets in 52 games during that span. With San Francisco, Thomas will provide a veteran presence in its TE room behind starter George Kittle.
George Kittle : Remains on track for training camp
Kittle (groin) has set a goal to be ready for training camp following core muscle surgery this offseason, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Kittle stated he played through the injury for about 10 weeks last season, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Although he was hurting, the two-time All-Pro still managed to accumulate 65 receptions on 90 targets for 1,020 yards and six scores. Even if the 49ers opt to err on the side of caution with Kittle when training camp approaches, it would not impact his status as one of the top fantasy options at tight end.
