The San Francisco 49ers‘ season ended Saturday night in Seattle.

A 41-6 loss to the Seahawks in the NFC Divisional Round closed the door on a campaign that had already tested the organization in every way imaginable. Christian McCaffrey gave everything he had until the very end, playing through a shoulder stinger suffered late in the first half before the 49ers ultimately shut him down as the game spiraled out of reach.

After the loss, McCaffrey reflected on what the season had cost him physically and emotionally.

“This was one of the hardest years of my life,” McCaffrey said. “And everything that happened to me last year—kind of had to overcome a lot of odds. And from the time January 1st happened, I was rehabbing and working my butt off every single day. My wife went through it. There was not a lot of time off.”

What McCaffrey Overcame to Lead the 49ers

McCaffrey missed 13 games during an injury-plagued 2024 campaign.

The setbacks raised questions about whether he would be ready for Week 1 of the 2025 season. Some wondered if he could still withstand the grind of a full NFL season. McCaffrey answered those questions emphatically.

He recorded a career-high 413 touches during the regular season. Piling up 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 total touchdowns, he was dominant. During the postseason, he added another 188 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. McCaffrey was the engine of San Francisco’s offense, and the team leaned on him heavily as injuries mounted across the roster.

The physical toll was real. San Francisco dealt with absences at nearly every key position throughout the year. George Kittle tore his Achilles in the Wild Card Round. Fred Warner and Nick Bosa combined to play just nine games during the regular season. The offensive line rotated constantly due to injuries.

McCaffrey carried the burden. Week after week. Game after game. Never complaining, he showed up and delivered.

“When I look back at all the people that helped me out, and the people that were with me every step of the way, and believed in me when a lot of people didn’t, I appreciate that,” McCaffrey said. “I’m just really grateful for my family, my friends, and everybody in that locker room.”

Kyle Shanahan Praises McCaffrey’s Season

Head coach Kyle Shanahan called McCaffrey’s 2025 season one of the most impressive individual performances he has ever witnessed.

“I think this was one of the most impressive seasons by an individual player ever,” Shanahan said. “Just in terms of what a warrior and man he is week in and week out. People to do that every week, and to do it for 17 weeks in a row, not getting a bye week until December, and then to do it these last two games, Christian finds a way every week.”

Shanahan continued, emphasizing the level of dedication McCaffrey brings to his preparation.

“He commits himself 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to get his body possible to go out there and compete, and I’ve never been around anything like that. The dude was unbelievable. His dedication to really empty the tank every single game, and to be able to do that that many games in a row, is something that I’ve never really seen before.”

Shanahan’s praise reflects the reality of what McCaffrey accomplished this season. Playing 17 regular-season games without a bye week until December is grueling. Adding two playoff games on top of that, all while managing the wear and tear from 413 touches, is borderline superhuman.

McCaffrey did not just survive the workload. Thriving under it, he remained the focal point even when the offense struggled, as it did in Saturday’s loss to Seattle.

Why This Year Was So Difficult for McCaffrey

Saturday’s loss was a microcosm of the challenges McCaffrey faced all season.

The game started disastrously for San Francisco. Rashid Shaheed returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Seattle jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, the most points the 49ers had allowed in an opening quarter in franchise history.

McCaffrey did what he could. Brock Purdy found him for first-down passes. At times, the offense moved the ball. But San Francisco was outmatched up front. Seattle’s defensive line dominated the 49ers’ offensive line, and Purdy was under constant pressure.

Late in the first half, McCaffrey suffered a shoulder stinger. Visibly in pain, he still returned in the third quarter. As the score continued to spiral—Seattle eventually led 34-6, then 41-6—the 49ers shut him down for good.

The injury capped a season in which McCaffrey dealt with constant physical challenges. Three short weeks in the final month of the regular season. Limited practice time. A roster around him that was held together with duct tape and determination.

“Every year, every week presents different challenges, some harder than others,” McCaffrey said. “But at the end of the day, we’re all going through stuff. Everybody in there’s fighting. Having three short weeks in the last four weeks has not been easy, but we got a group of grinders who will go out there and fight whenever.”

What the Loss to Seattle Means for the 49ers

The Seahawks dominated San Francisco on both sides of the ball.

Seattle held a 271-181 yardage advantage after three quarters. Kenneth Walker III ran through the 49ers’ defense untouched multiple times, scoring twice in the second half. San Francisco could not get off the field on third down, and Seattle made them pay repeatedly.

Before Saturday, only one team had ever scored 40 or more points with fewer than 300 yards of offense in the playoffs. That was the Greatest Show on Turf in 2001. Seattle did it to San Francisco on Saturday night.

The loss exposed the talent discrepancy between the two rosters. Injuries had caught up to the 49ers, and it showed against the best team in the NFC. San Francisco is officially eliminated from the playoffs. Seattle will host the NFC Championship Game against the winner of the Chicago BearsLos Angeles Rams matchup.

Final Word for the 49ers

Christian McCaffrey gave everything he had this season.

Overcoming the doubts from 2024, he carried the 49ers through a year defined by injuries and adversity. One of the most impressive individual seasons in recent memory was delivered, just as Kyle Shanahan said.

But Saturday’s loss was a harsh reminder of the reality San Francisco faces. Talent matters. Depth matters. Health matters. None of those advantages existed for the 49ers against Seattle, and the result was a blowout loss that ended the season in the worst possible way.

McCaffrey called this one of the hardest years of his life. The physical and emotional toll was evident. But showing up every week, fighting through pain, and giving his team a chance is what he did.

That is all anyone could ask. And it is a testament to why McCaffrey remains one of the most respected players in the NFL.
