The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Jauan Jennings reached a reported compromise. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on September 3 that the new agreement between the 49ers and Jennings adds $3 million in performance-based incentives to the player’s contract.

Moreover, Schefter reveals that instead of the $7.5 million he was set to earn this season, Jennings now has the potential to make up to $10.5 million. As David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard stated on X, this compromise feels like a win for both sides.

To those sayingthe 49ers owned Jauan Jennings in this process— are you realizing that he wasn’t a free agent?Lombardi wrote.

“Jennings had very limited mobility here. He secured a shot to earn up to $3m more. Didn’t give up [his] 2026 [free-agent status]. [The] 49ers maintained salary-cap integrity. Both sides win — that’s why both shook hands on the deal.”

Did the 49ers Want to Reward Jauan Jennings?

The 49ers appeared to be unwilling to give Jennings a new contract or trade him. Nonetheless, San Francisco probably didn’t want to come off as unreasonable or imply that they didn’t value the player.

As a result, they provided an alternative. Lombardi believes that the franchise wanted to reward the player with a potential pay increase that fits their financial system for this season.

“The 49ers could have been complete hardliners here and not budged one bit,Lombardi wrote on X.They even worked to insulate themselves a bit at WR outside of Jennings. But cultural upkeep is important and comes with a cost, too.

“Jennings may not be an A-lister but he’s been a sterling performer that fits the operation like a glove. It’s good business to reward those types of players when circumstances dictate, even if there isn’t much wiggle room.

Kyle Shanahan Commented on the Contract Standoff

On September 3, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters he holds no grudges against Jennings and emphasized that he wants every player on the team to have the chance to earn what they can.

“We have no issues with Jauan in [terms of] relationship,Shanahan said (h/t KNBR).[With] Jauan [it’s] all love, that was never personal.”

During his time as the 49ers’ head coach, Shanahan has seen the team reward players who proved themselves on the field. He has also experienced the tough side of team management, watching key players move on for higher-paying opportunities.

With his extensive NFL experience, Shanahan has learned to keep personal feelings aside regarding team decisions. He recognizes that players have a limited time to secure their financial stability, and that a single injury or sudden roster move can quickly change their earning potential.

It’s business, and that’s the tough thing about this,Shanahan added.I want every player to make as much money as possible. I want every coach. I want everybody to. It’s just hard in situations to always do that, but that’s something as a coach you’re always pulling for.

“But also, I do understand the business, too. Sometimes it’s hard when other people don’t, so you got to communicate with people and stuff like that so it doesn’t become personal. But the relationship I’ve always had with Jauan, never really worried about that.”
