With the NFL’s free agency period officially kicking off on Wednesday, March 11th, plenty of teams are preparing to add veteran help. The San Francisco 49ers are one of those teams, especially when you consider the fact that they currently possess over $35 million in cap space.
According to Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante, the Niners could be the ideal landing spot for former New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who was released by the Patriots this offseason after just one season with the team.
The San Francisco 49ers May Need Stefon Diggs

GettyStefon Diggs was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.
Diggs will now be looking to join his third different team in the last three seasons. While that could be cause for concern, along with injury and possible off-the-field issues, the former Viking proved in 2025 that he can still be a highly productive pass-catcher. Fresh off a torn ACL, the four-time Pro-Bowler recorded 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns for the Pats en route to helping them make the Super Bowl. It was his seventh career 1,000-yard season.
On the 49ers’ side of things, they will be in need of wide receiver help. With veteran receivers such as Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk likely set to depart from the Bay Area this offfseason, the team could be down not just one but two potential starting receivers. While GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan may not necessarily need a No. 1 wide receiver, they need production at the position. That is what Diggs could give them.
Furthermore, the team doesn’t need to offer Diggs a massivee contract. Now 32 years of age, the former Buffalo Bill and Houston Texan likely knows his days of securing a massive payday are over. However, the opportunity to play for a win-now team could be incentive enough.
The 49ers’ Title Window is Still Open

GettyThe San Francisco 49ers haven’t won a Super Bowl since the 1994 season.
While San Francisco has come close to taking home it’s first Super Bowl in the last three decades, it hasn’t happened yet. Under the stewardship of Lynch and Shanahan, the team has either made it to the Super Bowl or the NFC Championship game in four of the past six seasons. However, the ultimate title has eluded them.
Still, this team is built to win right now. With the likes of star players, especially on offense, such as Pro Bowl quarterback Brock Purdy and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, this offense can still compete with anybody. Adding a potential 1,000-yard veteran in Diggs could be all this team needs to return to the Super Bowl. An offense with Purdy, McCaffrey, Diggs, and a healthy George Kittle could be incredibly tough to stop.
Of course, led by All-Pro edge-rusher Nick Bosa and All-Pro middle linebacker Fred Warner, the 49ers’ defense is also one of the top groups in the league. That is if everyone can, once again, stay healthy.
But time will tell on whether or not the 49ers decide to go all in on adding a top pass-catcher like Diggs. After all, they are still in a contract dispute with 12-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Trent Williams.
