Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn took the podium on Wednesday with his usual energy, delivering updates on the team’s health, preparation, and philosophy heading into Week 4. From quarterback Jayden Daniels’ return-to-play process to wide receiver Terry McLaurin’s status, Quinn’s press conference shed light on where the Commanders stand ahead of another tough matchup.

Injury Updates and Quarterback Progress

Quinn began his remarks with an update on the health of several key players. Most notably, rookie quarterback Daniels is making progress in his return from injury. While Daniels remains limited in practice, Quinn praised his work ethic and determination to get back on the field.

“He is doing everything you possibly can to get there,” Quinn said. “The guy’s the ultimate competitor for us, you know that, I know that but he’s absolutely digging.”

Daniels has been able to move well in practice, running and cutting at a level that suggests he is closing in on a full return. Still, Quinn stressed that the final decision will rest with the medical team.

As for McLaurin, the coach confirmed that the star receiver is seeking a second opinion, something Quinn described as “really common.” McLaurin did not practice Wednesday and will be reevaluated later in the week. Guard Sam Cosmi remains on the physically unable to perform list, though Quinn noted that the lineman has been working hard and is close to rejoining the team setting.

Special Teams as a Weapon

One of the standout moments from Quinn’s press conference came when he discussed the role of special teams. The coach has been vocal about turning the new kickoff rule into an advantage, and Wednesday he detailed how that mindset has shaped the Commanders’ identity.

“When the new kickoff rule started, we were right at the front of that to say, can this be an advantage?” Quinn explained. “I thought it would begin there on the kickoff and kickoff return side. Then as we got to learn it better, we thought, man, this can be a weapon for us.”

Quinn highlighted punter Tress Way’s consistency and praised players like Jeremy Reaves, Nick Bellore, and Percy Butler for elevating their performances. He emphasized that field position remains a critical factor in games, pointing to punt returns as a potential game-changing element.

This philosophy reflects Quinn’s commitment to finding every edge, whether it comes from offense, defense, or special teams. For the Commanders, it is not just about matching opponents but creating momentum through overlooked areas of the game.

Embracing the Next-Man-Up Mentality

With injuries affecting key contributors, Quinn doubled down on the importance of depth. He explained that the team’s mindset is rooted in preparation and competition, ensuring that every player is ready when their number is called.

“We train the players that at some point when that space comes where you’re called upon, you’re able to deliver,” Quinn said. “It’s one of the best feelings that you can provide to your teammates.”

The coach also pointed to the benefit of non-scripted practice reps, where players face live situations and must adapt quickly. According to Quinn, this approach builds confidence and ensures the roster is always sharp.

Quinn’s philosophy was reinforced by his praise for veterans like Marcus Mariota, who stepped in seamlessly last week. He also highlighted the development of players such as Dorance Armstrong, whose ability to generate pressure has been more impactful in 2025.

As the Commanders prepare for their next challenge, Quinn’s message was clear: adversity is expected in the NFL, but preparation and belief in the roster allow his team to meet those moments head-on.
