The Washington Commanders finalized their inactive list for today’s Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Northwest Stadium. Head coach Dan Quinn and his staff confirmed that six players will not suit up, forcing the team to adjust its strategy and depth for a critical early-season matchup.

The team declared quarterback Jayden Daniels, defensive end Preston Smith, linebacker Kain Medrano, guard Brandon Coleman, wide receiver Noah Brown, and tight end John Bates as inactive. The decision to sideline Daniels comes after a week of monitoring his recovery progress. Quinn stressed during Friday’s press conference that Washington would prioritize a cautious and smart return-to-play plan for the second-year quarterback. Coleman’s decision to be inactive comes as a bit of a surprise as the second year player practiced most of the week and played in the team’s last contest against the Packers. The team mentioned that his inability to play was not injury related.

Marcus Mariota will lead the offense in Daniels’ absence. Mariota, a seasoned veteran, has prepared with the first-team offense throughout the week and has the full confidence of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and the coaching staff. The Commanders enter the game with a 1-1 record, aiming to secure a bounce-back victory after last week’s loss to Green Bay.

Recently signed Smith’s absence leaves Washington without an experienced defensive linemen. Smith’s veteran leadership and pass-rushing ability could have been key against a Raiders offense that features versatile weapons. The Commanders will rely on Dorance Armstrong, Von Miller, and younger contributors to generate pressure on Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith.

Offensive Adjustments and Depth Players to Watch

The inactives list also impacts Washington’s offensive lineup. Guard Brandon Coleman’s absence forces the offensive line to reshuffle, potentially testing the unit’s depth against a Raiders defensive front anchored by Maxx Crosby.

Wide receiver Noah Brown’s injury keeps him sidelined, limiting Washington’s receiving options and increasing the workload for Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel Sr., and rookie pass-catcher Jaylin Lane.

Tight end John Bates sitting out could affect Washington’s blocking schemes and passing depth at the position. Expect veteran tight end Zach Ertz to play an even larger role than what he is accustomed to, with backup options stepping in to support both blocking and short-yardage situations.

History in the Making at Home

The Commanders entered this season aiming to defend their home field and build on last year’s success at Northwest Stadium. With a win, Washington would move to 2-1 for the third consecutive season and maintain its momentum at home. The team scored 20 or more points in seven straight home games dating back to last year, and they will look to extend that streak despite missing key contributors.

Quinn has repeatedly praised his team’s resilience, reminding fans and players that adversity offers opportunities for growth. The matchup against Las Vegas will require contributions from role players eager to prove themselves. Fans can expect Washington to play with energy, discipline, and determination as they attempt to secure a statement win in front of their home crowd.
