There is no secret that the Detroit Red Wings are enduring a tough offseason. The summer essentially started with captain Dylan Larkin requesting a trade out of town. Detroit brass then fired general manager Steve Yzerman, and star veteran Patrick Kane departed to join the Chicago Blackhawks.
Because of these things, there is a sense of dread around Detroit. In fact, a recent poll by The Athletic showed that fan confidence in the Red Wings front office ranked 30th among NHL teams. As one person put it, Detroit is “a total dumpster fire right now.” Fans are not the only ones feeling the tension surrounding the club at the moment. Moritz Seider recently admitted that there is a “big list” of issues that need to be solved soon.
During a new sprawling interview with The Hockey News, the superstar defenseman initially claimed that the Detroit Red Wings are not “far off” from making noise in the playoffs. Seider even claimed that Detroit “can beat any team in the league” as well. Nevertheless, the blueliner went on to admit that there are lots of issues for the new GM to fix.
“It’s just up to management,” Seider said of the team’s roster moves. “I’m a player and don’t have to decide all those things. I think there’s a big list of things that need to be addressed, and whoever’s going to be the new person I think will guide us in the right direction.”
New Detroit Red Wings GM has to Handle Dylan Larkin, Simon Edvinsson Situations

GettyMoritz Seider is currently an alternate captain to Dylan Larkin for the Detroit Red Wings.
The next Detroit Red Wings GM will have two major issues to sort out as soon as possible. Larkin’s future with the club should obviously be top priority. So far, the veteran forward is only willing to play for three or four other NHL teams. The star’s demands have not changed since Yzerman departed. For now, Shawn Horcoff is temporarily taking over the reins until the Red Wings find a permanent GM.
On top of the Larkin situation, the club also has to figure out what to do with Simon Edvinsson. The budding star blueliner is currently a restricted free agent. Although the Detroit Red Wings have plenty of cap space and want to keep the defenseman, a deal has not yet been ironed out. A recent report suggests that Edvinsson wants to wait until Detroit has a new GM in place before continuing contract negotiations.
Detroit’s GM Search Began With Dozens of Candidates
With training camp just weeks away, the Detroit Red Wings are finally stepping up their search for a new exec. A source recently told Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press that the club “started with over 100 names” for the position. The source would not provide a timeline for the hunt, but did claim that it will be a “very thorough strategic process.”
Seider will obviously be hoping the Red Wings can successfully navigate through this tough period. Along with the superstar blueliner, Detroit has other key players in place. As a result, they must resist a full-blown rebuild by swapping Larkin for draft picks/prospects. For now, the team is sticking to its original asking price of a star player in return for the captain.
