Toronto Maple Leafs play-by-play announcer Joe Bowen disclosed the origin of his phrase, ‘Holy Mackinaw!’ The phrase has become synonymous with Bowen’s broadcasting career and tied to numerous legendary moments in Leafs history.
Bowen, 74, is beloved for his passionate commentary and genuine love for the franchise. Fans became familiar with his enthusiastic phrase whenever there was a big goal or save.
In a 2015 interview with VIBE 105.5FM Toronto, Bowen revealed that his iconic phrase came from his childhood. His late father used to say it, and Bowen adopted it five years into his tenure with the Leafs.
He admitted that he never expected the phrase to resonate with fans.
“I never thought it would be a catchphrase at all. My dad used to say it when I was a kid,” Bowen said. “Unfortunately, my dad passed away before I went into high school, so I never really found out where he got it from.”
Bowen explained that he began using the phrase more often after witnessing the strong reaction it received.
“I didn’t utilize it until about five years into doing games with the Maple Leafs. One night it just kinda blurted out for some inexplicable reason and the fellow who was doing [commentary] with me, Bill Watters, almost fell out of his chair laughing,” Bowen said. “I thought, well, if I got that response from him, maybe I could use it again, so it’s become a bit of a catchphrase over the last number of years.”

Bowen has been a mainstay on Leafs radio broadcasts. Many fans have even petitioned for MLSE, Sportsnet, and TSN to bring him back to TV.
He previously split his time between radio and TV for regional broadcasts. However, after Rogers acquired the NHL’s national broadcasting rights in Canada, Bowen was moved to radio full-time.
In an emotional open letter to Leafs Nation, Bowen explained his decision to retire.
“After 44 years of being the voice of your Toronto Maple Leafs, I’ve decided that the 2025-26 season will be my last behind the microphone,” Bowen wrote in a letter posted on X. “I have been totally blessed to do my dream job for this long, eclipsing the career of my idol Foster Hewitt.”
Bowen will conclude his career with his legacy already cemented. In 2018, he received the prestigious Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.
