The latest Philadelphia Eagles news brings fans a significant trade. The team landed two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard in a deal with the Tennessee Titans, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who reported that the Eagles are sending future fifth- and sixth-round draft picks along with veteran safety Terrell Edmunds to the Titans in exchange for Byard.

“The Titans paid Kevin Byard $7 million of his $11M compensation for 2023 in a signing bonus as part of a revised deal back in July,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweeted on October 23, 2023. “So, not much cash involved in the transaction for the #Eagles, who add a two-time first-team All-Pro.”

It is a substantial move for the Eagles to upgrade an already stout defense heading into the second half of the season. Philadelphia is widely being praised for the low-risk deal.

“This is a steal by the Eagles,” 94 WIP’s Eliot Shorr-Parks posted on X.

Philadelphia Eagles News: Philly Has an Out in Kevin Byard’s 2-Year, $25 Million Deal This Offseason

Byard’s two-year, $25 million contract is slated to run through the 2024 season and has just a $2.4 million cap hit for 2023. This number jumps up to a $14.1 million cap hit for next season.

According to Spotrac, Philly holds an out in Byard’s deal this offseason, allowing the team not to have to pick up the safety’s deal for 2024. Last season, Byard graded out at 79.5 from Pro Football Focus, but this number is down considerably in 2023 at 67.3.

Through the first six games of 2023, Byard already notched 47 tackles for Tennessee. Byard posted 108 tackles, 6 pass deflections and 4 interceptions in 17 starts last season.

After Spending 5 Seasons as a Pittsburgh Steelers Starter, Terrell Edmunds Started Just 2 Games for the Philadelphia Eagles

Edmunds signed with the Eagles in March after five seasons as a starter with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had a reduced role during his short stint in Philadelphia, making seven appearances but notching just two starts.

Through the first six games, Edmunds posted 28 tackles and a forced fumble for the Eagles. The Philadelphia front office continues to be aggressive after signing longtime star wideout Julio Jones heading into Week 7.

“This is a game-changer in the secondary. Byard is one of the best in the NFL and can play both safety spots and nickel,” Shorr-Parks wrote on X. “He will be able to fill in multiple roles if needed in the Eagles secondary and will take what has already been a pretty good secondary and take it up a level.

“Byard is not only elite, he is consistent. Byard has played in every single game since 2017. He is currently ranked as the 15th best safety overall and 9th best in coverage, per PFF. He is 30-years old, but he is not declining, and he is still one of the best in the game.

“Once again Howie Roseman shows he is going all-in to try to win a Super Bowl.”

It will be interesting to see what Eagles rumors continue to pop up as the team approaches the October 31 trade deadline. With Roseman leading the way, Philadelphia may not be done dealing with more than a week to go.
