Jozy Altidore Discusses Giovinco Reunion

Jozy Altidore shared his thoughts on reuniting with Sebastian Giovinco and facing Ronaldinho. The special TFC legends vs. Brazil legends match took place last night in Toronto. Fans were treated to an entertaining matchup and a night filled with nostalgia.

Altidore and Giovinco are two of Toronto FC‘s most important and beloved players in club history. They were a part of TFC’s most successful years and turned the club’s fortunes around, making them perennial MLS Cup contenders. During their time in Toronto, they helped the club reach back-to-back MLS Cup finals, winning in 2017 and completing a domestic treble.

Giovinco left the club before the 2019 season, signing with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. They had not shared the pitch as players since then until last night. Ronaldinho led the Brazilian legends squad, which featured the likes of Adriano and Diego.

TFC legends picked up a 4-3 victory. However, the score was an afterthought to the excitement surrounding the players on the pitch and the rich history on display.

Altidore expressed joy about being able to play with Giovinco again, saying it reminded him of TFC’s glory days.

“Man, it felt like we still got it. That’s what it felt like. Four years, I haven’t really doing anything in soccer at all, so to get out here and connect with [Giovinco] was fantastic,” Altidore said post-match. “The reaction from the fans, to come out here and make it such a great atmosphere, it makes you want to be at BMO [Field] all over again.”

Jozy Altidore Opens Up on Playing Against Ronaldinho

Jozy Altidore also spoke on playing against Ronaldinho, whom he admired as both a fan and a player. The former USMNT striker played during the same era and witnessed the Brazilian legend’s contributions and impact on the sport.

Ronaldinho is recognized globally and is considered by many to be one of the most exciting players to ever step on the pitch. His dribbling frequently left world-class defenders frustrated, as he made it look so effortless.

For Altidore, the 2002 FIFA World Cup winner represents the joy and passion of the ‘Joga Bonito’ era. He expressed happiness in seeing Ronaldinho and his teammates receive overwhelming appreciation from the fans in attendance.

“[It was great to play against] all of [those Brazilian legends]. It’s weird. I grew up in the ‘Joga Bonito’ era, when Ronaldinho was doing the commercials off the crossbar,” Altidore said. “These guys carried the game in a way for a long time. The mystique, the fun that comes with it. And again, great to see them get their flowers in moments like that.”

Altidore Reacts to Playing at BMO Field Again

Altidore also opened up about playing at BMO Field again. The former Toronto FC striker said last night’s experience reminded him of his playing days when the club was thriving.

TFC has struggled over the past few years, which stands in stark contrast to the success experienced a decade ago. Altidore acknowledged the difficult period for the club but noted that the atmosphere proved that Toronto fans are still passionate.

“It’s amazing. Funny enough, this is what we were used to when we were here. I know things are different now,” Altidore said. “It’s great to be in the stadium and have that kind of environment.”
