The first-ever Everton vs Liverpool clash at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium ended in late heartbreak for Everton FC as Liverpool FC secured a 2–1 win. The match moved at a high pace and stayed physical from start to finish. A VAR decision in the first half, a key injury in the second half, and a late goal all shaped the outcome.

Everton had strong moments, especially after their equalizer, and looked set to earn a point. Liverpool stayed patient and took their chance at the end. The result keeps Liverpool’s Champions League push on track, while Everton is left with a result that slipped away very late.

Everton vs Liverpool: Mohamed Salah’s goal and VAR call shift momentum

The game began with strong energy from both sides. The home crowd created a loud atmosphere, but Liverpool took control in the 29th minute. Mohamed Salah finished a low cross to give Liverpool the lead. The goal also saw him match Steven Gerrard’s tally of nine goals in this fixture.

Everton responded quickly when Iliman Ndiaye found the net. However, VAR reviewed the goal and, after a lengthy process, officials disallowed it due to Jake O’Brien being offside and interfering with play.

The decision caused frustration among Everton players and fans. It also changed the flow of Everton vs Liverpool, as Liverpool held onto their lead going into halftime while Everton pushed but could not find a way through.

Everton vs Liverpool: Equalizer Comes, but Injury Disrupts Rhythm

Everton started the second half with more urgency and got their reward. In the 54th minute, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall sent a dangerous ball into the box. Beto reacted quickly to score and make it 1–1.

The goal came with a setback for Liverpool. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili suffered a heavy collision during the play and could not continue. With Alisson Becker unavailable, Freddie Woodman came on for his Premier League debut.

The pace of Everton vs Liverpool slowed after that moment. Everton pushed forward and created chances, but Woodman made a key save to deny Dwight McNeil. At the other end, Jordan Pickford made a strong stop from Luis Díaz.

Everton vs Liverpool: Van Dijk Seals Late Win in Added Time

As the match moved into added time, it looked set to end level. Ten minutes were added due to the earlier injury, and both teams stayed cautious.

In the 100th minute, Liverpool found the winner. Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a corner to the back post. Virgil van Dijk rose highest and headed the ball into the net.

“To win the first derby in this stadium in that fashion is special. We knew it would be a battle, but we showed the character required to take all three points.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche reacted after the match. “We deserved more today. The VAR call was marginal, and to lose it in the final seconds of injury time is gutting.”

The result in Everton vs Liverpool moves Liverpool seven points clear of Chelsea FC in the race for the top five. Everton remain 10th after a match decided in the final moments.
