The New Orleans Saints are going nowhere fast, and the Miami Dolphins have a lease on NFL life but last star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to a season-ending knee injury in the process.
Miami beat the New York Jets on Monday night, 27-21, to improve to 1-3 for the season, which gives minimal hope for a playoff run. New Orleans, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4 in a loss to the Buffalo Bills, 31-19, on Sunday and therefore could become sellers at the trade deadline.
Therefore, the Dolphins could seek a trade for Saints star wide receiver Christ Olave as USA Today Dolphins Wire’s Adam Stites sees it. Stites explored the trade idea and how it could look.
This would be splashy for the Dolphins, and they may not be inclined to make a big move as buyers with a 1-3 record,” Stites wrote. But this deal could set up the team with a receiver duo of the future that pairs Olave with Jaylen Waddle in the place of Hill. The rebuilding Saints would presumably want a hefty return in a trade, which will likely preclude Miami from considering a deal.
But the former first-round pick’s still-cheap rookie contract could actually be absorbed by the cash-strapped Dolphins,” Stites concluded.
Chris Olave Could Join the Giants Instead
Then again, Olave’s name already came up with the New York Giants because of star wide receiver Malik Nabers‘ season-ending knee injury on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. Dan Benton of USA Today’s Giants Wire speculated on how that could work.
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave is under contract through the 2026 season, but his future in The Big Easy is tenuous at best,” Benton wrote. He’s going to be in line for a big contract, and the Saints may be more interested in accumulating draft assets as they rebuild, as opposed to signing players to mega deals.
This would be a splash move for the Giants, and one that would come at a significant cost. But never say never,” Benton added.
Maybe Chiefs or Texans Instead
The Kansas City Chiefs or Houston Texans could also use wide receiver help and could approach the Saints for Olave as USA Today’s Saints Wire’s John Sigler sees it.
Sigler proposed that the Saints send Olave to the Chiefs for a first-round draft pick in 2026. If not, Sigler suggested the Texans as an alternative destination for Olave.
They own two second rounders (one via the Washington Commanders) as well as two fourth-round picks (another one from Washington) and could put together a competitive package,” Sigler wrote. “Houston is several years away from extending star quarterback CJ Stroud, and reuniting the old Ohio State Buckeyes teammates has obvious appeal.”
A Chris Olave Trade Seems Reasonable For Saints
Regardless of destination or trade suitors, Sigler broke down why the Saints trading away Olave makes sense.
Olave has a year left on his contract after the Saints picked up his option for 2026, so any team trading for him would be on the hook for his $15.5 million salary cap hit next season,” Sigler wrote. “He’s going to be seeking a multiyear contract extension worth twice that. Trading him now would give his new team time to see how he performs in their offense and decide whether to extend him.”
