Chael Sonnen recently shared his thoughts on Dana White’s remarks about Jon Jones competing at the White House event. He praised White’s honesty, but said the UFC CEO is negotiating with Jones publicly.
Sonnen argued that White’s comments weren’t dismissive—they were tactical. President Donald Trump recently revealed plans to host a UFC event at the White House for the country’s 250th anniversary. White confirmed the plan, prompting Jones to express interest in headlining the event despite having retired.
Jones publicly stated he would like to fight at the White House on Jul. 4, 2026. However, White didn’t sound too convinced that it would be a good idea during his UFC 318 post-fight press conference. He said that he can’t risk depending on Bones for such a significant event.
Sonnen addressed White’s comments on the latest episode of GOOD GUY / BAD GUY and explained how Jones wasn’t rejected. He broke down the UFC CEO’s comments and said that it was a calculated move.
“[White] was doing nothing more than negotiating. If you look at what he did and how well he delivered that line, and it got a quick response from [Jones],” Sonnen said. “Dana is making it very clear, ‘I’m not gonna wait until then…If you would like to fight on that grass, I just need to see that you are willing to fight at all.’ I think that Jon vs. Tom got closer than ever for 2025.”
How did Jon Jones React to Dana White’s Comments Regarding White House Card?
Jones didn’t hide his disappointment about White’s hesitation. Still, he tried to focus on the upside of the situation.
In a post on X, Jones said White’s remarks give fans a clearer picture of his mindset and intentions. He reaffirmed that he’s in the UFC’s testing pool and committed to fighting again.
Jones emphasized that fighting at the White House would be one of the most meaningful moments of his career.
“The silver lining in all this is knowing the fans see my heart. They see, I am ready and willing to take on anyone, to represent my country on a historic stage,” Jones wrote. “For me, it’s never been just about the opponent. I’m chasing legacy, something timeless, something bigger than the moment. So for now, I’ll keep grinding, stay patient, and stay faithful.”
Jon Jones Says Dana White’s Comments Were Misunderstood by the MMA Community
Jones also responded to fans who interpreted White’s words as a sign that he’s out of the running. He flat out disagreed with that take.
He responded to a fan’s post on X and claimed that White’s comments have been misinterpreted on social media. Jones reminded fans that he’s headlined events his entire career and remains confident he will do so again next July.
“That’s actually not what [White] said. He said he can’t afford for anything to go wrong. Which is understandable, it’s hard to commit to any athletes literally still a year out. Let’s not twist words, my entire career has been main event.”
Jones’ desire to compete at the White House could be a positive sign for White. His determination may lead to a highly anticipated bout against Tom Aspinall finally materializing.
