The Indiana Fever confirmed on Sunday that Sophie Cunningham is returning after signing a one-year deal. Cunningham arrived from the Phoenix Mercury last offseason via a four-team trade.
Cunningham instantly became a fan favorite with the Fever fanbase after a wild game against the Connecticut Sun on June 17. She turned into the team’s enforcer and protector of Caitlin Clark.
However, her season was cut short on August 17 after suffering a torn MCL in her right knee. She finished her first Fever campaign averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She shot a career high 43.2% from 3-point range.

In a statement released via the Fever, Cunningham expressed her love for the team, especially after what they were able to accomplish last season. She also explained why she returned to Indiana.
“We had a really special group last year, and it was an incredible first season for me in Indy,” Cunningham said. “I loved everything about my teammates and the Fever organization. We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started.
She added, “I have a feeling this is going to be another special season, so I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!”
Cunningham wasn’t the only player the Fever brought back. They signed Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull on Saturday. They also signed free agents Tyasha Harris and Monique Billings. Damiris Dantas is reportedly returning to Indiana as well.

In addition to being a fan favorite, Cunningham brought a lot of positive energy to the Fever last season. Her play on the court was also outstanding, providing shooting that spaces the floor.
Cunningham is expected to have a valuable role under coach Stephanie White this upcoming season. Fever general manager Ambex Cox revealed in a statement why one of their priorities was to bring back the Missouri product.
“We are thrilled to have Sophie back with the Fever and are grateful for her commitment to return and build on what we started a year ago,” Cox said. “Not only is Sophie one of the best three-point shooters in the league, but she is an exceptional teammate, both on and off the court. She plays with infectious energy that impacts not only our team, but our fanbase as well.’
According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, Cunningham signed a one-year deal with the Fever. It’s unclear if she signed a max contract, like Mitchell. She also has had a huge offseason, which included several sponsorships, hosting gigs, a new podcast and even an appearance on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
