The New York Yankees really need to get going this offseason. Their lack of moves has been puzzling for those who cover Major League Baseball, and time is slowly running out. While the Yankees have a good roster on paper, they are still awaiting the decisions of Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, and where they will play in 2026.
However, if the Yankees are unable to retain at least Cody Bellinger, they will have to make a big move to try and replace that offensive production. As for Goldschmidt, he’s likely going to depart in free agency due to age and poor performance down the stretch of last season. New York has Ben Rice, who broke out in 2025, but it’s unclear if he is for sure going to be the first baseman headed into the season. A recent prediction by SNY has the Yankees landing 3X Batting Champion Luis Arráez, which would essentially replace Paul Goldschmidt, in a good way.

Yankees Predicted to Add Batting Champion Luis Arráez
Luis Arráez has made his career so successful due to being a pure singles hitter and someone who can be counted on to keep the line moving in the batting order with a base hit.
His free agency is fascinating because it’s really interesting to see what the rest of MLB values his production and worth at. As of now, it appears that his free agency has been slow developing, and no reports that show any teams having a strong interest. But that’s certain to change once other big-time free agents (Like Bellinger) make their decisions.

In a recent predictions piece by SNY’s Anthony McCarron, the Yankees are urged to sign Luis Arráez as their new first baseman:
“But after the baseball world watched the Blue Jays set a postseason record for hits last October, it might be worth adding a little contact to the homer-happy Yankees. Arráez owns three batting titles and has led his league in hits twice, including last season.”
So, how does Arráez fit with the Yankees, who already have several left-handed hitters?

What Would Luis Arráez’s Fit With New York Be?
This is where things get interesting, because Arraez has served primarily in the leadoff spot for the last several years of his career. However, New York favors having guys who can hit home runs at the top of the order, which might mean the three-time All-Star infielder could be better off in, like the seven-hole, and purely be in the lineup to help turn the order over.
In 2025, Arráez played 156 games and posted a .292 average with 181 hits, eight home runs, and 30 doubles. His OPS+ was 99, but his career OPS+ is 115, which denotes he’s an above-average hitter.
It’s clear that he relies heavily on batting average to carry some of his other numbers, and if he’s not a .300 hitter, his value in the lineup plummets due to his low slugging percentage.
He led his respective league in average three consecutive times, but one thing Yankees’ fans will certainly be wary of is the fact that Luis Arráez’s contract situtation gives flashbacks to DJ Lemahieu, who had also been a great hitter before going to New York, but then fell off a cliff and became a player that nobody in New York wanted up to the plate in a big spot.
