After over a decade in the NBA, Lamar Odom has accrued quite a fortune.

Odom didn’t grow up rich while living in South Jamaica, Queens. But during his time in the NBA, he signed some pretty lucrative deals. A big man with the speed to cover smaller players, on paper Odom was an asset to any NBA team.

But his off-the-court struggles limited his career, and past run-ins with law enforcement damaged his marketability. Now, Odom is fighting for his life in a Las Vegas hospital.

1. His Rookie Contract Was For $8 Million

Odom entered the NBA before the 1999-00 season, after being drafted fourth overall by the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers were bad but Odom was good, earning first-team All-Rookie honors.

After his first NBA season, Odom began to misbehave in LA. He was suspended twice for drugs over the next two seasons, and his time is LA was short-lived. Odom’s biggest financial boost came from Pat Riley, who signed him to a six-year $65 million contract in 2013. Odom’s time in Miami was short-lived, as he was sent back to LA in the Shaquille O’Neal trade.

LA is where Odom spent the majority of his career. He spent seven total seasons in LA, and re-signed to stay with the Lakers in 2009 for $33 million.

When Lamar married Khloe Kardashian, he went all-in on the family. Now that they’re seperated, he’s had a hard time getting out.

Odom’s history doesn’t make him a candidate for many endorsements. Instead, Odom’s alternative income comes from his projects at Rich Soil Entertainment. Rich Soil started as a joint venture between Odom and Queens rapper Ali Vegas. Vegas released his own album under Rich Soil, and Odom has attempted to release clothing under the Rich Soil brand.


5. Odom Was Preparing for an NBA Comeback

Recently, Odom was challenging himself for an NBA comeback. He was signed by the Knicks during the 2014 season, and given the opportunity to work out and attempt to get back into basketball shape. That never happened, as the Knicks released Odom at the end of the season. Before his brothel binge, Odom’s trainer reported that Odom was training “three hours a day” in preparation for another return to pro basketball.
