The Orioles optioned Handley to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Handley arrived in the majors Saturday to provide insurance behind the plate after Adley Rutschman (ankle) landed on the IL, but the former will now return to the minors without playing a game for the O's. Cameron Foster was recalled from Norfolk in a corresponding move.
The Orioles selected Handley's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. The move comes as a result of Adley Rutschman landing on the 10-day IL due left ankle inflammation. Handley dealt with a left ankle injury of his own in late March and early April, but he returned to Norfolk's lineup Friday and will now head to the big-league club, presumably to temporarily back up Samuel Basallo behind the plate. To make room for Handley on the 40-man roster, Baltimore designated Chayce McDermott for assignment.
Handley was removed in the bottom of the fifth inning of Triple-A Norfolk's 6-2 loss to Nashville on Sunday after being hit in the left ankle by a pitch, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Outrighted off the Orioles' 40-man roster during the offseason, Handley ended up sticking around in the organization and was expected to serve as catching depth at Norfolk in 2026. Handley will likely be sent in for further tests as the Orioles look to determine the severity of his ankle injury.
