Michael Gasper: Breaking News

Gasper (groin) went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter and played the final inning as the catcher in Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays. With two outs and two runners on in the eighth inning, Gasper pinch hit for starting catcher Connor Wong but struck out against Toronto closer Louis Varland. That Gasper could operate behind the plate -- even for only one inning -- indicates he could rejoin Boston's starting lineup Wednesday after opening the last two games on the bench.

Gasper (groin) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Blue Jays. He'll miss a second straight start after having started each of the previous seven tilts. Gasper is considered day-to-day. Connor Wong will do the catching and Masataka Yoshida will serve as the designated hitter for the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that Gasper is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers due to slight groin tightness, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Gasper started the previous seven games -- three at catcher, four at designated hitter -- but will be forced to the bench Sunday due to the groin issue. The injury doesn't seem to be a serious concern, and the 30-year-old will have Monday's team off day to aid in his recovery. Carlos Narvaez is starting behind the plate Sunday for Boston.
