Paine College Shooting: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

There are breaking reports of a shooting at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, according to WJBF. The school was on lockdown after the second shooting on campus in 24 hours. According to WSB-TV, the situation is being treated as an “active shooter.” At 3:48 p.m., WSB-TV reported that a suspect was in custody.

Here’s what we know so far:

1. 1 Person Was Shot

One person is reported injured in the shooting. The Augusta Chronicle reports that the victim was shot in the shoulder and does not have life-threatening injuries.

2. This is the Second Shooting at the School in 24 Hours

On May 5, there was shooting on campus on May 5 in a male dorm room. Paine released a statement on that incident:

Paine College Police Department acknowledged that an incident took place Sunday afternoon in one of the male residence halls on campus. The incident involved non-Paine College students. Individuals discharged a firearm on campus which immediately took the campus in a lock down mode. Paine College Police and Richmond County law enforcement are investigating the incident. At this time, the campus is safe. As further developments occur, more details will be released.

The Augusta Chronicle reported that there were two suspects on the May 5 shooting. The paper said:

Two students told police they were coming down the stairs in Gray Hall when they saw two black men with a gun inside the building. The students ran from the buildings as the gunmen fired shots inside the building and continued firing outside, according to a sheriff’s office incident report. One of the fleeing students was injured when he fell while running and hurt his finger.

3. Cops are Searching For a Suspect

The Augusta Chronicle reports that police are searching for a burgundy Toyota in relation to the shooting. WJBF reports that the suspect is a black male, 5’8″, 160 pounds, wearing black jeans, white t-shirt and a red hat. The suspect was apprehended.

4. The Entire Area Was Lockdown

The nearby school, Georgia Regents University is also on lockdown. NBC 26 reported that cops set up a permitter around the college. A local high school, T.W. Josey High, has been placed on “soft lockdown” in relation to the incident. A Paine College employee told WSB-TV that she was barricaded in an office until the lockdown is over. As of 2 p.m., the college is largely deserted with some college employees and students on lockdown and others evacuated. The lockdown was lifted just before 4 p.m. with WJBF calling the situation “resolved.”

Paine College is a private liberal arts school in Augusta, Georgia. The school counts actor Danny Glover among its alumni.
