Jason Moore walked into The Fifth Quarter Sports Bar and Pizzeria and shot dead his ex-wife Lori Moore and her new boyfriend Lance Griffel both in the head. An off-duty FBI agent, also in attendance, returned fire at Jason and killed him.

East Peoria Police Chief Dick Ganschow explained the quick turn of events to Peoria’s Journal Star.

After just a brief moment inside the bar, he pulled out a weapon and shot a female and a male. He was subsequently shot.

Lori warned her friends that Jason might show up, but didn’t expect what unfolded, Lori’s friend Keely Absher told People.

She said he might turn up at the reunion. And we sort of rolled our eyes and were like, ‘Oh, the drama.’ But no one had any idea that he was planning to do anything more.

2. Police Credit FBI Agent for Preventing a Mass Shooting

An off-duty FBI agent took down Jason before he could shoot any of the other restaurant patrons. His quick action may have “prevented a further tragedy,” Ganschow told the Journal Star.

It’s very difficult to say. You can play the ‘what if’ game over and over again, but I think it’s pretty clear in his case the presence of this officer and his ability to take very quick and very decisive action prevented a further tragedy.

Jason spoke with people outside and inside the bar before the shooting. After he shot Lori and Griffel, he tried to kill himself but gave “himself only superficial wounds,” according to the Journal Star. That’s when the FBI agent fired his weapon while another patron tried to tackle Jason to the floor. No video caught the act because it occurred in the camera’s blind spot.

3. Police Believe the Shooting Was Domestic Violence Related

A memorial fund for Lori and Jason’s children , Kaydin and Callie, was established to help “provide some sense of comfort during this unimaginably hard time,” the memorial creator Keely Absher wrote on the Go Fund Me site.

[Lori] often would talk highly of her son, Kaydin, whom she referred to as “the boy,” and would tell stories of his intelligence, wit, and how he would amaze her every single day. She adored Callie’s high-spirited personality and the fact that she seemed wise beyond her years. Her kids meant everything to her.

Due to the shooter’s past relationship with his ex-wife, police believe the shooting was a domestic violence related event, NBC affiliate WEEK-TV reported.

Ganschow told WEEK-TV that “domestic situations are extremely volatile.”

There is a certain level of volatility and unpredictability that are involved. The emotion level is high and sometimes they just reach a point and people snap.

Police discovered Jason had a recent prescription refilled for sleep aid Ambien and the anti-depressant Effexor, Journal Star reporter Matt Buedel tweeted.

4. Jason Texted Lori 45 Minutes Before the Shooting

Jason sent his ex wife a series of text messages before arriving at the sports bar. He told Lori he was “cool” with her relationship with Griffel, but then turned the conversation to their child support agreement, according to the Peoria Journal Star.

So if you guys get real serious and live together please reconsider our child support agreement. I’m struggling to make ends meet.

He also offered to care for their children while she and Griffel went to the reunion. Lori told him they were at home and wouldn’t need him to babysit. She thanked him for the offer, but Jason wanted to see his kids before his scheduled visit the next day.

I wasn’t trying to be nice to you, I just wanted my kids… Ok. I’ll see you at the 5th quarter until 9.

The exchange grew heated over the next hour with Jason suggesting Lori “grow up” and then ending the conversation with this threatening message:

Anywho, I’m going to show up just to piss you off.
