Anthony Volpe faces renewed pressure after the New York Yankees made a surprising prospect decision, according to one analyst.

The New York Yankees are set to open up a three-game weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

New York is 20-11, and in first place in the American League East. Before the Orioles series, Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared a clarifying Anthony Volpe message.

Aaron Boone Says Anthony Volpe Will Remain in Minors Through Weekend

Some reports surfaced earlier this week that the New York Yankees would return the services of Anthony Volpe for his 2026 season debut either Wednesday or Thursday this week. It’s now Friday, Volpe is not back with the club, and manager Aaron Boone recently said Volpe will remain in the minors through the weekend.

New York has to make a decision with Volpe soon.

Brendan Kuty wrote (on May 1): “Boone says Volpe will play in Somerset through the weekend”

Chris Kirschner followed that up with the fact that the Yankees will have to make a decision on Volpe soon:

“Volpe’s 20-day clock for his rehab assignment expires on Sunday. He will either have to be activated on Monday or be optioned.”

Anthony Volpe has become quite the controversial infielder in New York, and with the Yankees performing so well lately, some are beginning to question what his role with the team actually will be. He’s taken 34 at-bats in the minors and appears to be fully healthy after offseason shoulder surgery. Volpe tore his labrum at some point last season.

When Will Anthony Volpe Return?

It’s the biggest question surrounding the New York Yankees right now. The calendar has now turned to May, and Volpe still isn’t with the big league club.

And Aaron Boone has been asked plenty of times about him, but he pretty much sidesteps the question every time. Volpe hit .212 last season with 19 HR, 72 RBI, and 150 strikeouts. Jose Caballero has been hitting well at the shortstop position in Volpe’s absence.

This Volpe-Yankees situation also brings up the idea of the Yankees just trading Anthony Volpe while they still can, and offloading this drama completely.

Either way, a final decision will be made here by the end of the weekend, and it’s very plausible that Boone reveals after the Orioles game on Friday that Volpe will rejoin the team on Saturday.
