‘Whirly Girlie’ must have been one of the most dramatic episodes in Pretty Little Liars history. Favorite characters returned, Aria went off the rails after shooting Shauna, and someone died.

Read on to find out what you missed.

1. Spencer and Toby Meet Up and Make Out

Toby and Spencer, Toby Spencer PLL

Toby surprises Spencer and she’s thrilled to see him. He admits that he went to London to find out information from Melissa, but when he went to her apartment, Wren opened the door and said she’d left the city.

To no one’s surprise, the two get hot and heavy halfway through the episode. Toby can tell something is up, though, since Spencer acts all spacey, but when he asks her what’s wrong she avoids the question and gives him the cold shoulder.  She does make somewhat of a big commitment to Toby when she says the two of them are going to go to London and never come back. Like that will ever happen.

Later on, Spencer tries to find Ali in her room only to see Jason creepily sitting in the corner of the dark house. Spencer asks Jason why he was in New York, and if he’s the one that kidnapped her. He firmly says he wasn’t.

2. Aria’s Haunted By Shauna

(Screenshot/ABC Family)

We all know Aria’s a pretty compassionate person, which makes the fact that she killed Shauna all the more troubling for her. Aria (obviously) feels terrible about what happened– regardless of the fact that Shauna was a raging lunatic, Aria can’t seem to forgive herself for what happened. Throughout the episode, she’s plagued by the sound of a violin– the instrument Shauna used to play. Mike kind of says that he’s responsible for the violin music, but that only complicates the situation. Does Mike know something? And why’s he all lovey dovey with Mona?

Aria frantically tries to distract herself by making a shed that she can convince Detective Holbrook the girls could have

When frantically creating a shed the girls would convincingly have played in to cover Ali’s lie to Detective Holbrook, Aria worries that if A finds out that she killed Shauna, she’ll be next in line. In an emotional moment, Aria screams that she’s not sure how she’ll live knowing she killed someone.

It’s probably worth mentioning that Aria’s brother confronts Mona, telling him he misses her. She’s later seen canoodling with Aria’s brother at home, and gives Aria a whistle. Aria more or less attacks Mona, saying she knows she’d hiding stories. Mona creepily asks, “How’s Mr. Fitz doing. Will he make a fully recovery?” Mona’s hiding more and we’re not sure what it is yet.

3. Ali Tells Detective Holbrook ‘Everything’

the girls march in Holbrook’s office with a plan to come clean with everything– including the “Jenna” thing. But Ali tells a lie: she says she was kidnapped and held hostage for two years and if it weren’t for her friends, she wouldn’t be alive. She tells Detective Holbrook that Emily, Spencer, Aria, and Hanna hid her in the woods, in a shed they all used to hang out in. Her story has holes in it, though, and isn’t what the girls planned to say to Detective Holbrook, which infuriates Spencer and causes her to question Ali’s intentions. Again.

In the end, it turns out the reason Ali spins all these lies is because she got a text during the confession. It reads ‘The truth will bury you in a New York Minute’.

4. Mrs. DeLaurentis Is Dead

In a heartbreaking scene, Ali’s dad, Kenneth, tells his little girl that he can’t give her back the past, but he will do everything in his power to make her forget what happened.

The issue of where Mrs. D has snuck off to haunts the whole episode. In the middle of the episode, a woman from the pound mysteriously comes to Ali’s house with a dog that she claims Ms. DeLaurentis ordered.

Ali’s dad notices that Jason is acting weird and concludes he must be hiding his mom in Philadelphia. Ali’s brother threatens Hanna and Emily when they’re conspiring to figure out where Mrs. DeLaurentis is. Emily persuades Hanna to follow Jason, hoping it’ll lead to where Mrs. D is.

Ali doesn’t get why Jason has acted do distant since her return home. When she asks him how their mom reacted to her homecoming, Jason says she was overjoyed. Later on, Hanna finds an email in Mrs. D’s inbox that reads “I can’t protect you anymore.”

In the super dramatic last scene of the episode, the girls follow the dog from the pound outside, only to find Mrs. D buried dead in the ground. That’s right– Alison’s mother is dead. And based on Ali’s tears, she has absolutely no idea why or what to do.

5. Mona’s Evil Once Again

Alison goes to visit her mausoleum, even though she’s not supposed to be out of her house.

Mona creepily walks in in a black hoodie. Ali tells Mona she needs her as a friend. (Why?) And Mona repeats the text Ali had received beforehand, ‘The truth will bury you in a New York minute.’ Mona says she doesn’t have to hide, and that Ali does. Did Mona just come out as the true A? She tells Ali she’s gonna wish she stayed dead. Harsh.

The whole episode left us with a lot of important questions. Why were Aria’s parents pretty much MIA? What exactly did Mona mean when she confessed? What happened to Toby’s hair? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
