Sixteen-year-old Florida resident Ashley Lyon, missing since June 13, was found and is recovering in critical condition in a Louisiana hospital, according to police. Lyon and her abductor, twice-convicted sex offender Steven Patrick Myers, were recognized by a truck stop employee outside of Lafayette, Louisiana. The employee called the police, but Myers wasn’t giving in easily. The 40-mile police chase that ensued ended only after cops disabled Myers’ truck by shooting out the tires — Myers continued to operate the truck even as it skidded on its rims, causing sparks to fly up. When he was no longer able to drive the vehicle, he jumped on the top of it, revealing self-inflicted stab wounds. He yelled to police to “shoot him now;” police instead sicced K9 dogs on him and Myers was eventually brought down by dog bites.
Lyon was found inside the disabled vehicle, also with severe stab wounds. Both were taken to area hospitals.
Here’s what you need to know about Myers:
1. Myers Abducted & Stabbed 16-Year-Old Ashley Lyon
Cops say the 41-year-old exchanged thousands of text messages—including photos and videos—with the troubled teen before she disappeared the Friday before Father’s Day. Lyon had just finished her sophomore year, and met Myers in April. Lyon, who has bipolar disorder, became friends with Myers after being bullied at school. When she was finally found six days later, she had been stabbed multiple times — likely around the same time that Myers stabbed himself.
2. Myers Spent Time In A Georgia Prison
Myers was accused of child molestation in Georgia and was sentenced in March 1999. He spent time in prison and then on probation, and was convicted again in August 2003 for lewd acts with a child under age 16. Lyon downplayed his conviction to her parents when speaking about her relationship with Myers, noting that he had spent time on probation but that he wasn’t dangerous. After the harrowing chase ended on June 19, Myers was arrested for stabbing and critically wounding Lyon.
3. He Is A Father With Two Teenage Sons
Myers is a registered sex offender at his Plant City address, where he lives with his mother. Myers’ ex-wife and his two sons live in nearby subdivision, and Myers began spending time with them in January. Lyon is friends with Myers’ sons, which is how the two met.
4. Local Teenagers Called Myers “Dad”
Cops say Myers and Lyon exchanged messages using pseudonyms, even after Lyon was grounded and forbidden to hang out with Myers. Myers spent a significant amount of time with his sons’ friends, skateboarding, driving around, and allegedly even attempting to purchase marijuana to smoke together.
5. There Was A Warrant For Myers’ Arrest
On Tuesday, June 17, almost four days after Lyon first disappeared, Florida police issued an arrest warrant for Steven Patrick Myers. He is charged with interference with child custody, traveling to meet a minor (a violation of his probation), and attempted unlawful sexual activity with certain minors. The charges, according to the Tampa Bay Times, carry a $50,000 bond and a nationwide extradition order.
