At least five people were killed in a Fort Lauderdale airport after a gunman opened fire in a baggage claim area, shooting at least 13 people and sending hundreds running for their lives and hiding in terror. NBC News identified the suspected gunman as Esteban Santiago, 26. He was taken into custody after the shooting, and police have not yet determined a motive. The suspect was born in New Jersey and is a resident of Anchorage, Alaska. However, authorities said that he flew in from Canada, with his gun checked in his luggage. According to witnesses, the shooting began at 12:55 p.m. in Terminal 2 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. When the shooter ran out of ammunition, he laid on the ground and waited for law enforcement. There were rumors at first that an additional gunman was on the scene at a different terminal, but authorities later said this was not the case.
