It has been a difficult few weeks for President Trump. A photo of Trump looking directly at the sun during the solar eclipse did not help matters.
This, from the White House pool report of the moment filed by the Guardian’s Ben Jacobs is, um, amazing: “At approximately 2:39, the President initially gesticulated to the crowd below and pointed at the sky. As he did so, one of the White House aides standing beneath the Blue Room Balcony shouted ‘don’t look.'”
While Trump later put on protective glasses, it only takes one photo for the meme train to leave the station. Check out the video of the awkward moment here. According to Real Clear Politics, Trump’s approval rating ranges from 35 to 42 percent depending on which of the recent polls you read.
This means many of Trump’s detractors only need a small window to seize the moment.
Trump watched the solar eclipse with the First Lady Melania Trump along with their son, Barron. The family watched the eclipse from the Truman Balcony at the White House.
The last visible full solar eclipse happened in 1979 when Jimmy Carter was the sitting president. According to The Atlantic, Trump did not speak publicly about the eclipse in the days leading up to the event, but did take time to witness the spectacle with his family.
While the photos of the president looking up at the sky are not the most flattering, it is understandable given the first thing anyone wants to do when told not to look at the sun is to do just that.
According to ABC News, the Trump family along with others in Washington D.C. were not in the path of totality, but were still able to see about 81 percent of the eclipse.
