Dobbins isn't slated to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. The same goes for fellow key RB Gus Edwards, which sets the stage for Kimani Vidal, Isaiah Spiller, Jaret Patterson and Elijah Dotson to handle backfield work versus Seattle on Saturday. Dobbins' next chance to see exhibition action will be Aug. 17 against the Rams.

Not in line to play Saturday
Dobbins isn't slated to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. The same goes for fellow key RB Gus Edwards, which sets the stage for Kimani Vidal, Isaiah Spiller, Jaret Patterson and Elijah Dotson to handle backfield work versus Seattle on Saturday. Dobbins' next chance to see exhibition action will be Aug. 17 against the Rams.
Practicing in full pads
Dobbins (Achilles) is participating in Day 1 of Chargers training camp Wednesday, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports. Dobbins, notably, will avoid having to begin training camp on the PUP list, confirming that he's truly healthy after having suffered a torn Achilles in Baltimore's regular-season opener in 2023. It more remains to be seen whether Dobbins has lost a step, as the torn Achilles tendon only represents the most recent hurdle in the gauntlet of severe injuries he's dealt with in his NFL career, also including a torn ACL, torn LCL and severe hamstring strain. Still, Dobbins has built up some traction this offseason, so he could be set for a significant role alongside former Ravens teammate Gus Edwards in a familiar rushing scheme led by offensive coordinator Greg Roman, as long as he's still able to impress as a ballcarrier.
Feels fully healthy
Dobbins (Achilles) said he feels 100 percent healthy heading into the offseason program, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. "I've had these injuries, and it's been a storm," Dobbins said. "But I think the storm is over with, and I think I'm going to take off now. There's going to be no setbacks, and the 'injury prone' thing will be gone out of the window." Since being drafted in the second round by the Ravens in 2020, Dobbins has missed a whopping 43 games to various significant injuries, including a torn ACL, torn LCL, severe hamstring strain and a torn Achilles tendon. To say the injury-prone label is behind him might be wishful thinking, as his body has yet to cooperate with him to this point. The 25-year-old Dobbins joined Gus Edwards in following offensive coordinator Greg Roman from Baltimore to the Chargers, so he will at least be in a familiar scheme.
Should be ready for training camp
Dobbins (Achilles), who agreed to terms with the Chargers on Thursday, "should be" ready for training camp according to GM Joe Hortiz, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network relayed last month that Dobbins -- who suffered a torn Achilles in Baltimore's regular-season opener in 2023 -- has been cleared for football activities, with previous reports having noted that the running back had resumed running this offseason. Based on the assessment of Hortiz on Thursday, Dobbins is still working his way back from his injury, but if the 2020 second-rounder is able to return to form, he and Gus Edwards (who also came over from the Ravens in free agency) have a chance to provide an effective 1-2 punch in the Chargers' backfield in 2024 under the guidance of offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who both players worked with in Baltimore.
Slated to join Chargers
Dobbins (Achilles) is in line to sign a one-contract with the Chargers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. A second-round pick of the Ravens in 2020, Dobbins had two of his first four pro seasons cut short due to an ACL tear in 2021 and then a torn left Achilles in Week 1 of the 2023 campaign. In his 24 career appearances, he's averaged a robust 5.8 yards on 234 carries, gathered in 27 of 35 targets for 177 yards and scored 13 total touchdowns. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache penned a letter to NFL teams in late March that Dobbins had received medical clearance to participate in football activities, but his new contract will be contingent on a physical. Once the move west to L.A. becomes official, Dobbins will join forces with former teammate Gus Edwards at the top of the RB depth chart, giving him some sway in fantasy working alongside QB Justin Herbert.
Meeting with Kansas City
Dobbins (Achilles) is visiting the Chiefs on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Dobbins met with the Chargers last week, shortly after orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache notified NFL teams that the running back has medical clearance for football activities. The 25-year-old is coming up on the seven-month mark since suffering an Achilles' tear in Baltimore's Week 1 win over Houston, with Schefter's report Tuesday morning suggesting Dobbins is expected to sign a contract soon.
Lines up AFC West visit
Dobbins (Achilles) is visiting the Chargers on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Dobbins, who was recently medically cleared for football activities, is coming off a left Achilles tear after previously missing all of 2021 and about half of the 2022 season due to a torn ACL and proceeding issues. That medical history undercuts otherwise impressive career numbers for Dobbins, who has averaged 5.8 yards per carry and scored 13 touchdowns since entering the NFL in 2020 as a second-round pick by the Ravens, but only suited up for 24 games in that span. Reuniting with offensive coordinator Greg Roman could make the most sense as a landing spot for Dobbins, but it's possible he doesn't garner more interest than a potential prove-it deal. The Chargers signed Gus Edwards,a former Baltimore backfield mate of Dobbins, early in free agency.
Clear for football activities
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache wrote in a letter to NFL teams Tuesday that Dobbins (Achilles) has received clearance to take part in football activities, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Dobbins suffered a torn left Achilles back on Sept. 10 and underwent surgery to repair it on Sept. 15, meaning he's a little less than seven months removed from that sequence of events. Tuesday's news comes on the heels of Dobbins posting a video in late February of him running on turf and then a treadmill. He's expected to visit teams in the near future, but any signing will be subject to a physical, so he isn't in the clear health-wise just yet. Since the Ravens selected him in the second round of the 2020 Draft, Dobbins has been dynamic when available, averaging a robust 5.8 yards per carry with 12 touchdowns in his 234 rushes in 24 games. However, his medical chart includes a torn ACL in addition to the aforementioned Achilles injury, so he may be resigned to a prove-it deal wherever he ends up.
Posts rehab videos
Dobbins (Achilles) posted a video Thursday that shows him running on turf and then a treadmill. Meanwhile, GM Eric DeCosta told reporters Tuesday that the Ravens plan to discuss new contracts with both Dobbins and Gus Edwards. The former is still rehabbing the Achilles' tear that ended his 2023 campaign after Week 1, while the latter is nearly four years older but just set career highs for carries (198), rushing yards (810) and rushing TDs (13). Edwards also averaged a career low 4.1 YPC, to be fair, after running for 5.0 or better in each of his previous NFL seasons. The rumor mill connects Baltimore with big-name RBs scheduled for agency like Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, but DeCosta made sure to mention Dobbins, Edwards, Justice Hill and Keaton Mitchell (torn ACL), with the latter two still under contract in Baltimore. Re-signing Dobbins or Edwards wouldn't necessarily preclude adding a bigger name, particularly in Dobbins' case given the poor track record of RBs coming back from Achilles injuries and the accompanying likelihood he'll have to settle for a contract without much guaranteed money. The 2020 second-round pick has played nine games since his rookie season, losing all of 2021 to an ACL tear and half of 2022 to ensuing issues with the same knee.
