The Jets wanted to rebuild their offensive line. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, New York requested Pro Bowl center Zack Martin in the proposed trade with the Dallas Cowboys that involved safety Jamal Adams.

The Cowboys declined, and the Jets countered with another Pro Bowl request, tackle Tyron Smith, which was also met with a resounding “no” from Dallas owner Jerry Jones, according to Rapoport.

However, the deal fell through and Adams remained a Jet, causing a rift between the team and their disgruntled safety.

According to Rapoport, the Cowboys’ best offer included a first-round pick and backup cornerback Anthony Brown. The Ravens were also involved in the talks and one additional “unnamed team” according to the report.

Rapoport also reported the Jets received “double-digit” calls for Adams, even though no deal was struck.

Adams did not play well in the Jets’ 26-18 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. He also had an injury scare late in the game. one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, Adams was forced to the locker room upon request from the concussion spotter.

“I was upset because what if that was a crucial part of the game to where we’re in the ballgame and they take me out and I’m fine,” Adams told the New York Post. “I was telling them I was good.”

Adams Felt Betrayed by Trade Talks

The safety did not ask to be traded, nor did he expect to be. Adams reportedly sat down with the Jets front office the week before the trade deadline and expressed his desire to stay in New York.

“At the end of the week last week, I sat down with the GM and Coach Gase and told them I want to be here in New York,” Adams tweeted about two hours after Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. “I was told yesterday by my agent that the GM then went behind my back and shopped me around to teams, even after I asked him to keep me here! Crazy business.”

The safety broke his silence with team officials earlier this week, sitting down to discuss the matter with owner Christopher Johnson on Thursday, according to reports. However, Adams has not yet talked to general manager Joe Douglas or head coach Adam Gase.

“We’ll eventually talk, but I felt comfortable talking to Mr. Johnson,” Adams told the New York Post. “ I felt like we had an understanding. I’ve always had a lot of respect for him. When he said that he wanted to talk, I was down for it. I was happy to talk to him.”

Adam Gase Reacts

Caught in the middle of the trade deadline drama is Adam Gase, who is having his own struggles in his first year as the Jets head coach.

“Anything as far as what’s happened the past week, anything that we’ve been dealing with is going to be handled internally,” Jets head coach Adam Gase told reporters earlier this week.

Gase now has the unenviable task of returning to Miami for the first since being fired by the Dolphins after the 2018 season. The winless Dolphins will be fired up to face Gase and the Jets on Sunday.
