University of Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson made a shocking announcement on Wednesday when he told the world that he would be declaring for the NFL Draft. The senior led the Crimson Tide to a Rose Bowl appearance in a very impressive 2025 campaign; however, his 14 starts this season are the only starts in his four-year Alabama career.
Analysts debated whether or not the quarterback should return to college football for one more tune-up year.
The debate has now turned into which team will take a risk on the inexperienced, yet all-impressive 23-year-old captain.
Todd McShay and his cohost Steve Muench believe that the Los Angeles Rams would be the best case scenario for the quarterback they believe is the third-best prospect in the draft.
“If he’s going to play for Sean McVay, and Matthew Stafford is playing another year, okay, well, now it’s genius. Now he’s a genius,” Muench said on “The Todd McShay Show” of Simpson’s decision to declare for the draft. “He broke the code; he put himself in the best position to succeed.”
Former scouts turned media personalities, McShay and Muench, both agreed that Simpson might have been better suited if he had played one more year in college. But the scouts also both agree that being drafted by the Rams would turn the entire narrative upside down.
“If it happens and it goes that way, he could really stick it to Muench and say, ‘hey, you said I came out too early, look at me now; I’m with this great playcaller, I’ve learned from one of the best to ever play the game — a future Hall of Famer,'” Muench continued.
“I want to say (the Rams are) the one exception, a lot of these other teams I just don’t know.”
Other Teams Projected To Interview Ty Simpson
The Pittsburgh Steelers are emerging as the early favorite.
As the last team to make the playoffs, the Steelers would control the 23rd pick in the 2026 NFL Draft if they were eliminated in the Wild Card round on Monday night. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not yet announced if he will be returning next season, but if he does, he would make a great mentor for Simpson to learn from.
Last season, the Steelers drafted National Championship-winning quarterback Will Howard on day three with no expectations of him seeing playing time in 2025.
Depending on how they feel internally about the rookie, Simpson’s Steelers draft stock could be all smoke.
Next, there is the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins just fired head coach Mike McDaniel. They still have not found a general manager after firing theirs in October.
If the new GM and head coach combo want to pick their guy instead of inheriting the old regime’s quarterbacks, Simpson would be a name to watch with the Dolphins picking 11th.
The Rams have the Atlanta Falcons‘ pick this year, as well as their own. The Falcons’ pick is 13th on the big board, and Los Angeles’ pick could vary anywhere from 24-32 depending on how their playoff run goes.
