‘Stitious’ Scottie Scheffler Makes St. Jude Charge With eBay Good-Luck Charm

Scottie Scheffler is very particular about his golf swing -- and his golf equipment.

There’s not a more talented golfer on the planet right now than Scottie Scheffler, but even the world No. 1 isn’t above a little superstition.

Scheffler was making a hard weekend charge at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis where he and the rest of the PGA Tour began the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Before making his push, Scheffler was asked during a post-round interview whether he was superstitious at all. The four-time major champion channeled Michael Scott from “The Office” in his response.

“Yeah, I use the same divot tool and ball marker most days, so (I’m) a little ‘stitious,” he told reporters in Memphis.

Scheffler also acknowledged he’s been using the same yardage book for the last four years. That, he claimed, was “just habit,” adding matter-of-factly “I like it.”

Fair enough.

Scottie Scheffler Commits to His Routine (or Superstitions)

However, he also revealed the depths he went to in order to ensure he had the divot tool he feels comfortable with on the green. In a story only the most privileged golfers in the world could tell, Scheffler revealed he has a very specific divot tool from the famed Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.

“Divot tool, actually it’s from Cypress Point. But I don’t use it because it’s from Cypress Point,” he explained. “It’s just the right size, and it’s metal, so they don’t make those types of divot tools anymore, so I found one there and I’ve stuck with it.”

The story doesn’t end there, though. As anyone who’s had a divot tool or any other number of small golf accessories on which you can spend all your money knows, those nicknacks have a way of getting misplaced.

“I bought it in the shop. I bought one last year or maybe two years ago, and I lost it at some point,” Scheffler continued, “and I literally could not find another divot tool like that.”

What’s an all-world elite golfer to do when something like that happens? One imagines he could make a phone call and have a box of them sent to one of his palatial estates and basically be good forever. He could probably even reach out to a manufacturer and have some custom divot tools made — metal and all.

Instead, Scheffler did what the common folk often have to do in such a situation.

Then I went on eBay, found a Cypress point ball marker, paid like 50 bucks for it,” Scheffler said.

What Else Makes Up Scottie Scheffler’s Routine?

And because he’s Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Open and PGA Championship winner made a return trip to the sacred grounds and made sure to load up.

It’s actually a fascinating look into the mind of a world-class champion who apparently will go to any lengths to make sure he feels comfortable on the golf course. We know he’s pretty particular about these sorts of things, too. Scheffler, like most professional golfers, has a warmup routine he uses before every round.

What’s interesting about Scheffler, though, is that while you’ll see high-tech gizmos and gadgets dotting the practice range at PGA Tour events, Scheffler’s most important piece of equipment might be a cheap rubber grip mold he uses during his warmup routines.

Scheffler also has a very specific warmup and stretching routine he follows both on the course and at home. And of course, in one specific instance, in a jail cell.
