
J.J. Spaun will earn $4.3 million as part of as part of a $21.5 million purse as the winner of the 2025 U.S. Open. The top prize and pool of money for the third major of the year remained the same as 2024. It is the largest purse among the major tournaments.
The 2025 tournament was played at the famed Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Sam Burns entered the final round on June 15 with a one-shot lead over Adam Scott. Spaun, Viktor Hovland, Tyrell Hatton and Carlos Ortiz also entered Sunday’s fourth round in contention for the win. Out of the top contenders entering play on Sunday, only Scott, the 2013 winner of The Masters had previously won a major championship.
After a rough start and a rain delay, Spaun (-1) rallied to take the victory by two strokes, hitting a remarkable putt on the 18th hole to seal the win over Robert MacIntyre (+1) after a birdie on the 17th put the 34-year-old into the lead. Hovland finished in third at +2. Burns and Scott both struggled after the break for rain amid the wet conditions, with Burns (+4) finishing tie for seventh and Scott finishing tied for 12th at +6. They entered the day with Burns at 3-under par and Scott at 2-under.
According to the PGA Tour, “J.J. Spaun becomes the first player on TOUR since 2003 to shoot in the 40s on the front nine of the final round and go on to win. He shot nine-hole scores of 40-32 in Sunday’s final round of the U.S. Open.”
As the winner of the 152nd U.S. Open, Spaun also receives a 10-year U.S. Open exemption, a 5-year exemption into the other 3 major tournaments, a 5-year exemption into the Players Championship and a 5-year PGA Tour card, plus 750 FedEx Cup points. Spaun will also earn 1.5 Ryder Cup points per $1,000 earned in the tournament. He entered the U.S. Open in 13th in the Ryder Cup standings. The top six players in the rankings in August will automatically earn a spot on the U.S. team.
Spaun has previously won the Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour in 2022 and finished as the runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the Players Championship in 2025. He was playing in only his second U.S. Open after missing the cut in 2021.
The 2024 tournament was won by Bryson DeChambeau.

The PGA Tour Heads to the Travelers Championship Next, With the Final Major, The Open Championship, Scheduled for July 17-20
The PGA Tour will head to the Travelers Championship in Connecticut after the PGA Championship. It will be the final of the eight Signature Events on the tour in 2025. As a signature event, the winner will receive a share of a $20 million purse. The Travelers will be played at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, from June 19-22.
The U.S. Open has the biggest purse among golf’s four majors. But it is behind the The Players Championship, which awarded a top prize of $4.5 million out of a $25 million purse March 2025 to Rory McIlroy. McIlroy took home $4.2 million out of a $21 million purse by winning The Masters a month later in the first major of the year. At the PGA Championship in 2025, Scottie Scheffler won $3.42 million out of a $19 million purse.
In 2024, The Open Championship paid out a top prize of $3.1 million out of a $17 million purse. The Open Championship in 2025 will be played at the t Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland from July 17 to July 20. The defending champion is Xander Schauffele.
