J.J. Spaun’s mother, Dollie Spaun, was an office manager in California, where he was born and raised. She is of Mexican and Filipino descent, according to a 2018 interview with the Daily Tribune, an English-language newspaper in the Philippines.
“So, my grandfather on my mom’s side, he’s not from the Philippines, but his parents were. But they moved to California and he was born there, but he spoke Ilocano, which is like a dialect of Tagalog,” he said at the Va. “My whole mom’s side, they’re all half Filipino and half Mexican, so that’s what makes up my heritage.”
2. J.J. Spaun’s Father, John Spaun, Was a Hospital Administrator
J.J. Spaun’s father, John Spaun, has worked as a hospital administrator, according to the Daily Tribune.
He told the newspaper that his Filipino colleagues have encouraged him to visit the country where his son has roots, “I am a hospital administrator and many of my nurses are from the Philippines. They would encourage me to go visit.”
He added, “We like Filipino food. Adobo, lumpia, pinakbet, deep-fried tilapia.”
3. Spaun’s Parents Were Both Golfers, With His Mom Playing While She Was Pregnant With Him & His Dad Setting Up a Net for Him to Practice in the Garage
According to a 2018 article in the Columbus Dispatch, Spaun’s parents were both golfers.
“His mother, Dollie, received her doctor’s permission to golf while carrying him until she was eight months pregnant,” the newspaper wrote.
“People would always tell me that my son was going to be a golfer when he grew up,” Dollie Spaun told Golf Week in 2018. “He was born to play golf,” Dollie said. “He used to watch TV as a little kid and he’d tell me, ‘Mom, I don’t want to watch cartoons. I want to watch Golf Channel.'”
Golf Week wrote, “When he was a baby, J.J. would watch from his stroller as John hit range balls. When he was old enough to walk, he’d go into the family’s garage and hit whatever he could into a makeshift hitting net John had hung up – balls, tees, even sockets from John’s toolbox.”
4. J.J. Spaun & His Wife, Melody, Have Been Married Since 2019
J.J. Spaun and Melody Means Spaun met through friends in California and have been married since 2019. They live together in Scottsdale, Arizona. She didn’t know much about golf when they met, but became a big part of his career.
At the Sentry tournament in 2023, Spaun talked about his wife’s journey from when they started dating to being a support system for him on the PGA Tour.
“I was like, Yeah, I’m a pro golfer,” he told reporters. “Because I thought I was cool. But she’s like, I don’t even know. What does that mean? Like, does that mean you’re like rich or something? I was like, No. And she’s like, I don’t really care. And I was like, All right. And we went like mini golfing or something and she’s like, This is lame. Her first tournament? I think it was — I got a spot at Riviera. Because I’m from L.A. and they gave me a spot in 2015. So that was her first time coming out and watching me.”
J.J. Spaun’s Daughters Were Born in 2020 & 2023
J.J. Spaun is the father of two daughters, Emerson and Violet. According to his Instagram page, Emerson was born on her mother’s birthday in 2020. Violet was born in 2023 just days before Spaun played in the Travelers Championship.
He decided to play in the tournament after talking with his wife. He told CTInsider.com, “She (Melody) was the one who said, ‘If the baby comes Monday, would you consider going? I would allow you to go, but I kind of don’t want you to go, but if you can make it worth your while there, then I’m OK with you going.'”
Spaun added, “We decided Tuesday morning. We waited to see if the tests were all good and they would be discharged within 24 hours. If I would have stayed Tuesday night too (at the hospital), no way I would have even tried to come.”
