The WM Phoenix Open tees off this Thursday with numerous storylines generating fan interest. Highlights include Scottie Scheffler looking to extend his overwhelming dominance and Brooks Koepka returning to one of the venues where he has been most successful. A total of 123 players will be competing for the title of the so-called “People’s Open,” as well as the winner’s share of the $9.6 million purse.
This is $400,000 more than the 2025 edition. The winner’s paycheck will be $1,728,000, which is $72,000 more than what Thomas Detry received when he won a year ago.

The WM Phoenix Open is yet another example of the sustained increase in purses over recent seasons on the PGA Tour. Excluding the 2023 season, when the purse hit $20 million because it was a Signature Event, the TPC Scottsdale tournament has seen a notable increase in its prize money.
Even before the emergence of LIV Golf, which undoubtedly influenced the rise in purses on the PGA Tour, the Phoenix Open was already distributing over $7 million ($7.3 million in 2020 and 2021). The purse grew to $8.2 million in 2022 and to $8.8 million in 2024. A year later, it surpassed the $9 million mark ($9.2 million).
The winners of the WM Phoenix Open, meanwhile, have been receiving more than $1 million since the 2007 edition. In 2024, they surpassed the $1.5 million mark.
A Bit of History

The Phoenix Open is one of the PGA Tour’s most historic events. Its first edition was played in 1932 under the name Arizona Open, with three-time major champion Ralph Guldahl as the inaugural champion.
Just two years later, the event began to be known as the Phoenix Open. USA Waste Services, Inc. has been the title sponsor since 2010.
The tournament has always attracted the biggest names in world golf. Proof of this is that its winners include legends such as Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Phil Mickelson, as well as current stars such as Scheffler, Koepka, and Hideki Matsuyama.
Mickelson, Palmer, Mark Calcavecchia, and Gene Littler share the record for the most titles in this event, with three each. Calcavecchia and Mickelson share the 72-hole score record (28-under 256), and both share the 18-hole score record (11-under 60) with Grant White.
The WM Phoenix Open is played on the iconic Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, a 7,266-yard, par-71 course. This venue has become one of the most recognizable on the PGA Tour circuit, thanks to the enthusiastic displays of support from the crowd at each edition of the event.
