The Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium. Willson Contreras went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, highlighted by a two-run blast to center in the first that traveled 411 feet. Brayan Bello threw 6⅔ innings, the deepest any Boston starter has gone this year. Trevor Story matched Contreras with a 4-for-5 night and two RBIs of his own.

Boston is 6-9. The Red Sox have won four of five since the turnaround began, claiming series over both Milwaukee and St. Louis. Something shifted over the weekend, and it started before anyone took the field on Saturday.

Willson Contreras took the floor during the pregame hitters’ meeting and delivered a message his teammates did not expect.

Contreras Challenged the Locker Room

Contreras addressed something he felt was urgent. The energy his new teammates were bringing to the ballpark. He told the group that this version of the Red Sox did not look like the team that had overpowered his Cardinals at Fenway a year ago. The intensity was missing.

He challenged them to bring more to the field and to each other. The message was direct.

“It needed to be said, and he’s the right guy for it,” Roman Anthony said.

Teammates backed up the message across the board. Wilyer Abreu said it motivated the group to bring extra intensity to every game. The emphasis shifted to celebrating everything in the dugout, from walks to singles to productive outs.

The results have followed. Boston posted its highest run totals of the year in consecutive games. Seven on Saturday night. Nine on Sunday.

Contreras Backed It Up With His Bat

Words only carry weight when they come from someone producing. Contreras has done that since the day he arrived.

Contreras carries a .302 average and a .957 OPS through 15 games, trailing only Abreu on the roster in both categories. It was only the third home run all season for Boston with a runner on base.

After the game, Contreras noted the team is starting to believe in themselves.

“I think believing in yourself … having that confidence is the base of everything.”

Manager Alex Cora acknowledged that high energy comes naturally when a team is hitting but said Contreras has delivered beyond what the front office expected when they traded for him.

“There’s a reason we got [Contreras] … he’s becoming a leader in the clubhouse, it’s fun to have him around,” said Cora.

The Red Sox Rotation Finding Its Footing

Bello’s outing was significant beyond the box score. He allowed six hits and a pair of walks while keeping St. Louis in check.

His only real damage allowed was Jordan Walker’s solo home run in the second inning. When the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, Bello navigated the threat in just 17 pitches.

The Red Sox are now 6-0 when a starter delivers a quality outing and 0-9 when they do not.

Final Word for the Red Sox

The record says 6-9. The trajectory says something different. Four wins in five games. Consecutive series victories. The deepest start of the season from Bello. A clubhouse that is finally playing with the energy that a new leader demanded.

Contreras did not wait for someone else to say what needed saying. He stood up, challenged the group, and then backed it up with his play. That is leadership.

The arms are pitching. The bats are waking up. The Red Sox face Minnesota next.
