Bello is slated to work in bulk relief behind an opener in Tuesday's game against the Phillies, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. After Bello struggled to a 9.12 ERA and 2.26 WHIP while starting in his first six appearances of the season, the Red Sox opted to use him behind opening pitcher Jovani Moran during his latest turn through the rotation this past Tuesday against the Tigers. The arrangement paid immediate dividends, with Bello reaching season highs in innings (seven) and strikeouts (seven) while limiting Detroit to one earned run on four hits and one walk. The Red Sox will face some tough decisions with their rotation once Garrett Crochet (shoulder) potentially returns from the injured list later this month, so Bello may need another strong showing Tuesday to ensure he continues to be utilized as a starter or in a starter-like role.

Bello (2-4) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven relief innings in a 10-3 rout of the Tigers. He struck out seven. Working as a bulk reliever for the first time in 2026, the right-hander entered the game to begin the second inning after Jovani Moran had given up two runs as the opener. Bello responded with his best performance of the year, setting new season highs in innings and strikeouts while firing 66 of 94 pitches for strikes. It was a timely bounce-back effort, as Bello's rotation spot appears to be hanging by a thread with Sonny Gray (hamstring) due back Wednesday and Payton Tolle pitching well. Even after Tuesday's strong outing, Bello carries a 7.44 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 24:16 K:BB through 32.2 innings. He'll need to string together another couple good starts to keep his job, beginning with a trip to the mound at home this weekend against the Rays.

Bello will be deployed as the bulk reliever for Tuesday's game against Detroit, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Bello has struggled to work deep into outings in the early going of the 2026 campaign, so the Red Sox are electing to utilize an opener Tuesday. The right-hander, who owns a 9.17 ERA and 2.15 WHIP over his last four appearances (17.2 innings), will follow Jovani Moran.
