Astros manager Joe Espada is facing an injury crisis.

The Houston Astros are a beat-up baseball team and are still in the midst of a tight American League West race with both the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. With the injury to Yordan Alvarez continuing to be severe, and a timeline for return not outlined, the Astros still need left-handed bats.

At the MLB trade deadline, Houston made a couple of big moves, one of them being the acquisition of former World Series hero Carlos Correa, lefty slugger Jesús Sánchez, and Ramon Urias.

After designating him for assignment, Astros’ first baseman Jon Singleton decided to decline the option to be outrighted to the minors, but now he is being brought back on with the organization.

Astros Sign Jon Singleton to Minor League Deal

According to Houston Astros writer Michael Schwab, Houston is bringing back Singleton on a minor league deal. Singleton went through waivers unclaimed last week and is now back with the organization that just let him go. Presumably, Singleton will start his new Astros tenure in Triple-A Sugar Land, and the front office will assess if he can be productive there before potentially bringing him back up.

Singleton was originally on the Astros roster headed into Spring training but was released from the roster before Opening Day. He’s spent most of his 2025 season in Triple-A with the New York Mets organization. In 55 games with the Syracuse Mets, Singleton hit .213 with 12 home runs. The Mets cut him back in June, and then Singleton signed back with the Astros on a minor league contract. He spent 18 games with Sugar Land and hit .254 with four home runs. After that short stint with the Space Cowboys, he was called up to the Astros’ big league club. The 33-year-old Singleton appeared in three games with the Astros last month, and he went 1-9.

However, Singleton did see a good amount of playing time with Houston in 2024. Through 119 games with the Stros last season, he hit .234 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs. He got that much opportunity because of Jose Abreu’s struggles and eventual release.

The Astros Have a Jon Singleton Obsession

Singleton started his MLB career with the Houston Astros back in 2014, and played two seasons with the club before taking a long hiatus from the bigs.

MLBtraderumors.com was on the news, and the writer Steve Adams had this to say about Singleton:

“Singleton will add a lefty-swinging option to the depth chart — one who seems to be a sentimental favorite within the organization. This is the third minor league deal Singleton has signed with Houston since 2023, and he’s spent the vast majority of career in the Astros organization.”

The Astros already have Christian Walker at first base, but Singleton is a lefty, and who knows, maybe the security of the Astros wanting him will unlock something in him.

With just a three-game lead in the AL West, the Astros are looking to get healthy and hot at the right time. They have as strong a one-two punch in their rotation as anyone, but Alvarez not getting healthier isn’t a welcome sign, considering he hasn’t taken an at-bat at any level since early May.
