The New York Mets‘ 2026 campaign has been filled with frustrations, injuries and subpar performances.
Throughout the season, the organization has been faced with endless criticism. As the postseason nears, their flaws are only becoming more apparent.
New York Mets Receive Harsh Words From Insider

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently shared his thoughts on the “biggest disappointments of the MLB season.”
Unsurprisingly, the Mets topped the list at No. 1.
“… the New York Mets—who entered the season with a 90.5 win total and a $375M tax payroll, both good for highest among all teams not named the Dodgers—are as good as dead for postseason purposes (and have been for a while) at 11 games back,” Miller wrote.
As Miller noted, New York did acquire a handful of players during the offseason, including Bo Bichette (3-year deal), Freddy Peralta (traded from the Milwaukee Brewers), Luis Robert Jr. (traded from the Chicago White Sox) and Marcus Semien (traded from the Texas Rangers). Still, they couldn’t take off during the regular season.
Injuries have also played a major role in the Mets’ struggles this year, as notable names like Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor have spent time out on the IL.
“…The only redeeming silver lining is that rookies Nolan McLean, A.J. Ewing, Carson Benge and Zac Thornton have all made a positive impact,” Miller added. “So, too, has Christian Scott in his return from Tommy John surgery…”
Where the Mets Stand Right Now

August is quickly coming to a close, but the Mets have yet to place themselves in a better position in the standings.
At the time of this writing, they are 59-71 overall, which forces them to last place in the National League East.
In the Major Leagues as a whole, the only organizations below New York are the Kansas City Royals (57-74), the San Francisco Giants (52-77), the Los Angeles Angels (52-78), the Colorado Rockies (50-79) and the Athletics (50-80).
Looking at FanGraphs’ MLB Playoff Odds, as of Aug. 23, the Mets truly are “as good as dead” as possible at this point in the season.
Now, as New York prepares to enter its series finale against the Chicago White Sox, they are coming off a much-needed 10-5 victory over the White Sox.
Up next, the Mets will be facing off against the Brewers for a three-game series at Citi Field.
For reference, Milwaukee is currently leading the big leagues at 81-49. They’ve managed to edge out the Los Angeles Dodgers (79-51) and the Tampa Bay Rays (76-53), although the margin remains rather tight between the trio.
They are now riding a three-game winning streak as they, too, approach their series finale.
As for New York, facing the top-ranked team in the big leagues this week will, of course, be no easy feat. The homestand series is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 7:10 p.m. ET.
