Ahead of Monday’s game, the Giants announced the news that they had designated Encarnacion for assignment.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area wrote: “To open roster spots for Bryce Eldridge and Jesus Rodriguez, the Giants DFA’d Jerar Encarnacion and optioned Will Brennan back to Triple-A. They have just three true outfielders on the roster, but Rodriguez can play LF and Christian Koss has some OF experience too.”

Encarnacion spent his rookie year with the Miami Marlins.

He had been in the middle of his third season with the Giants.

Right now, the 28-year-old is batting .176 with six hits and one run in 17 games.

Social Media Reacts

Here’s what people were saying on social media:

@mjgtrefratelli: “Still can’t believe we Dfa Matos for this guy. Who ever made that decision needs to also go”

@leftcoastbabe: “Despite that gaudy .176 batting average and .202 slugging percentage? (To be fair, he only got 34 ABs but yeah…pretty underwhelming.)”

@AdamSampson13: “Good Luck. NGL, one of the least interesting Giants during the time he’s been on the roster.”

@apremity: “Man I feel for Encarnacion. Still thinking about when he showed some serious power at one point last year (in Pittsburgh I believe), hoped they’d be able to make it work with him”

@MidwestGiants: “Wish it would have worked out for Encarnacion, but he was probably headed for this with Eldridge waiting in the wings. Wouldn’t mind if they resigned him in AAA, but if everyone is healthy he doesn’t have a spot.”
