Jerar Encarnacion: Breaking News

Encarnacion elected free agency Sunday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. After the Giants designated him for assignment Monday, the 28-year-old outfielder went unclaimed off waivers. Rather than sticking around in the organization as a member of the Triple-A Sacramento roster, Encarnacion opted to try his luck on the open market. Encarnacion will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal after slashing just .176/.200/.206 over 35 plate appearances with the Giants prior to being removed from their 40-man roster.

The Giants designated Encarnacion for assignment Monday. Encarnacion hasn't seen much action this season despite making the Giants' Opening Day roster. He has struggled at the plate when he has played, slashing .176/.200/.206 across 35 plate appearances. Encarnacion does not have any minor-league options left, so he may explore his opportunities elsewhere if he is not claimed off waivers by another team.

Encarnacion isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Encarnacion will sit for the second day in a row after going 5-for-18 (.278) across his last six games. Casey Schmitt will work as San Francisco's designated hitter and bat fifth while Encarnacion sits.
