Sebastian Walcott could miss the entire season due to elbow surgery.

The first week of MLB Spring Training took a somber tone for the Texas Rangers, as president of baseball operations Chris Young announced one of the team’s prized assets will miss most of the season. Infielder Sebastian Walcott had elbow surgery and will be sidelined for an extended period, Young told reporters, including Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. There’s a chance Walcott could return at the tail end of the season.

Walcott was known to be dealing with an arm injury. He left the Arizona Fall League early due to elbow inflammation. There was no previous indication that the issue would impact his 2026 campaign, though. Young said Walcott felt renewed soreness as he prepared for Spring Training, relays Grant. Dr. Keith Meister, a name closely associated with major elbow injuries, met with Walcott and ultimately recommended surgery.

It’s a crushing blow for one of the most promising young players in the game. Walcott is the consensus top prospect in the Rangers’ system. MLB.com ranked him No. 7 on its top 100 prospects list, while ESPN had him up at No. 5. The latter publication even tossed out a Fernando Tatis Jr. comparison. The soon-to-be 20-year-old is now facing a lengthy road back.

I think the big picture outlook is that this is a very special player who is going to go through a procedure right now, and he’s going to have a long, successful career,” Young said, relayed by Grant. “We’re going to get him right, and he’ll be better for it.”

Texas Rangers Lose Sebastian Walcott For Extended Stretch

Walcott was signed as an international free agent out of the Bahamas in January 2023. He made it to High-A by the conclusion of his first professional season as just a 17-year-old. Walcott really made a name for himself in 2024, slashing .261/.342/.443 in 116 games with Hickory. He racked up 26 stolen bases to go with 10 home runs. In five games at Double-A to close the year, Walcott went 8-for-23 with four extra-base hits.

The 2025 campaign saw Walcott solidify his place as one of the most exciting hitters yet to debut in the big leagues. He notched a 110 wRC+ in 124 games with Frisco, which means he was 10% better than league average as a 19-year-old. Walcott slugged 13 home runs and stole 32 bases. Despite his youth, he was knocking on the door of the big leagues. Now, he’ll likely have to wait until 2027.

Infield Outlook For Texas in 2026

The Rangers were already going through an adjustment period on the dirt prior to the Walcott news. The club traded longtime second baseman Marcus Semien to the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Brandon Nimmo. That meant utilityman Josh Smith would be stepping into a more full-time role, with Ezekiel Duran on hand to back up multiple positions.

Corey Seager and Josh Jung will man the left side, but both have dealt with serious injury issues in recent years. Seager hasn’t reached 550 plate appearances since his debut with the team in 2022. Multiple hamstring strains limited him to 102 games last year. Wrist, thumb, and neck issues have cost Jung significant time since he first came up in 2022. Walcott was a candidate to fill in for the incumbents if injuries popped up, but he’ll no longer be an option.
