It is going to be very hard to replicate the production of Bo Bichette in the Toronto Blue Jays lineup, and every Jays fan knows that, but it’s a matter of what the front office will do following Bichette’s signing with the Mets that will reveal the team’s shortstop plans.
While there aren’t really any top infielders available on the market, aside from Eugenio Suarez, Toronto still could make a splash in the trade market to acquire a star player. There have been rumors of the Washington Nationals being open to shortstop CJ Abrams, who might be able to relieve some of the pain from missing out on Bo Bichette.

Could the Blue Jays Trade for CJ Abrams?
If the Nationals are really open to offers for CJ Abrams, the Toronto Blue Jays should consider making a trade for him, as he would be a great fit in the Toronto lineup.
Recently, FanSided’s Christopher Kline proposed a three-player trade package for CJ Abrams, and it would see the Nationals acquire prospects JoJo Parker, Ricky Tiedemann, and Charles McAdoo from the Blue Jays in return for Abrams.
This is why Kline believes it could work out:

GettyCould the Toronto Blue Jays replace Bo Bichette AND make their team better?
“We are at the point where Abrams offers 20 home run-40 stolen base upside in any given year. Even if his growth stagnates and he just is who he currently is, Toronto would benefit a lot from having him under club control for three full seasons — with the financial ammo to hammer out a long-term extension if the marriage is a happy one.”
Abrams was an All-Star in 2024 and hit .257 in ’25 with 19 home runs and an OPS+ of 111. While Abrams may not have the same overall hit tool as Bichette, he has strong power upside and can also be a slight improvement defensively over Bichette.

What is the Blue Jays Infield Outlook?
The Blue Jays have a clear need for another infielder after missing out on Bo Bichette, but they did bring in Kazuma Okamoto.
As of now, according to the team’s depth chart page, Toronto will roll with Ernie Clement at second base and Andres Gimenez to complete the up-the-middle pairing. Okamoto will likely play third base, with David Schneider being a solid utilityman all over the field.
While it would take a haul to acquire CJ Abrams, after being mere moments away from winning the World Series, you have to think the Jays are living in a win-now state of mind, and will do whatever it takes right now to improve their 2026 roster.
And for the Nationals, they are under a new regime in the front office, and after trading away MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams could be the next player on the move.
