Can David Vargas fill Bo Bichette's shoes down the road?

The Toronto Blue Jays could have something intriguing with new shortstop David Vargas.

The Blue Jays have had a very busy offseason heading into the 2026 MLB season. They kicked things off in a big way, signing Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers, and Kazuma Okamoto. Lately, things have slowed down to a degree. However, Toronto was in the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes before he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite the Philadelphia Phillies being a favorite to sign Bo Bichette, the Blue Jays were linked until the New York Mets signed him to a three-year contract.

Things are still sorting themselves out with Cody Bellinger. The New York Yankees are battling the Mets for his services, while the Blue Jays have reportedly moved on. However, the Mets have made a surprising trade that takes them out of the race. Luckily for the Yankees and Bellinger, he has agreed to return.

The trade market appears to be heating up for the Blue Jays and the MLB. While those rumblings swirl, Vargas has an interesting profile that should interest Blue Jays fans.

Toronto Blue Jays Sign Shortstop David Vargas

According to Spotrac’s transaction log for the Blue Jays, they have signed shortstop David Vargas for $300,000. Francys Romero has Vargas on the list of players the Blue Jays signed from the International Free Agent class of 2026. According to Romero’s list, Vargas has the fourth-highest bonus.

At the time of this writing, there is no official listing on the Blue Jays transaction log.

Vargas is currently 16 years old and going to baseball prep school at Cartersville High School. PerfectGame.org has him listed at 5-foot-11 and 175 lbs.

David Vargas Stats & Scouting Report

Because Vargas is still playing high school baseball, the available statistics and reports are limited. Perfect Game has a scouting report on their website that should leave Toronto fans optimistic.

“Medium athletic build with lots of room to get stronger,” the report states. “Left-handed hitter, sets up with an open stance and an inward toe tap trigger, has rhythm and looseness to his hands and fires him on time, very high contact swing with advanced barrel control, contact to all fields, very projectable young hitter.”

“Primary shortstop on defense, has easy athletic actions and plays quiet and comfortable, nice footwork and balance, has some arm strength with more to come. Skills over tools at present, but has lots of physical projection.”

In 42 games at shortstop, Vargas recorded 30 runs and 22 RBIs. He recorded only 14 strikeouts in 144 plate appearances, giving himself a 9% K rate. Additionally, he made a lot of contact, recording a .350 batting average as the lead-off hitter.

Toronto Blue Jays Trade Rumblings

Mitch Bannon recently reported on the Blue Jays’ options to further add to their roster.

“The free-agent market thins out quickly after Bellinger, making the trade market the next avenue for a sizeable addition,” Bannon wrote on January 20th, 2026. “The Jays certainly have the prospect capital to make a major move. After drafting JoJo Parker and big seasons from Johnny King and Juan Sanchez in the low minors, the Jays’ system took a pretty significant jump in industry perception last year.”

Steven Kwan, Brendan Donovan, Alec Burleson, & Lars Nootbaar

Bannon went on to provide a few targets that the Blue Jays could realistically look at.

“The Jays checked in on Steven Kwan at the trade deadline last year, and his lefty contact bat would fit perfectly, hitting between Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the top of the lineup,” Bannon wrote. “However, the Cleveland Guardians were said to be asking for a gargantuan return. The St. Louis Cardinals have sold plenty of pieces this winter…Lefty hitters Brendan Donovan, Alec Burleson, and Lars Nootbaar could each help fill holes for the Jays beyond 2026.”

“But none is a massive upgrade over the internal options this year.”

The Latest on Cody Bellinger

According to reports, Bellinger is nearing a decision on his next team. It’s believed that the Yankees and the Mets are the frontrunners to sign him. However, Jon Heyman has reported that there are “two teams” besides the Mets or Yankees in on Bellinger.

The Mets are interested in signing him to a short-term deal, while the Yankees have offered a five-year, $155 million pact to keep him. One report said his decision would arrive shortly, while another said “within a week.”

Late on January 20th, 2026, the Mets traded for outfielder Luis Robert Jr. They sent Luisangel Acuna and Truman Pauley to the Chicago White Sox for Robert Jr. Now, one analyst believes the Mets will focus on upgrading their rotation.

Yet, a reunion between the Yankees and Bellinger can never be counted out. In fact, Randy Miller of NJ.com labels a reunion a “sure thing.”

Following this, Jeff Passan of ESPN broke the news of Bellinger reuniting with the Yankees. It’s a five-year, $162.5 million deal that includes a full no-trade clause.

With Spring Training rapidly approaching, teams will want to get a clearer sense of their rosters. For the Blue Jays, they will have to wait a few years before they can get Vargas into their farm system.

But until then, look for Toronto to make some kind of move to increase depth, or take a big swing that no one else sees coming.
