The Toronto Blue Jays enter the 2026 offseason positioned as one of the more intriguing contenders in the American League. After a strong showing last season, adding a true frontline arm could be the difference between another playoff appearance and a deep October run. Enter Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers’ left-handed ace whose current salary arbitration standoff has become one of the most talked-about storylines of the winter.
While the Blue Jays have made several additions this offseason (some who have already left the organization), Skubal would be a significant acquisition. Cody Ponce and Dylan Cease have joined the fold, in addition to Shane Bieber coming back. Adding those three to a rotation that is expected to also include Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, and Jose Berrios has pegged Toronto with one of the best rotations.
Skubal’s arbitration case might make him a more likely trade target, but some league executives aren’t buying that logic. Either way, one sports analyst has urged the Blue Jays to take a run at Skubal.
Blue Jays Urged to Consider Tarik Skubal Trade
Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, delivered another dominant performance in 2025. He finished 13-6 with a league-best 2.21 ERA in 31 starts, striking out 241 batters over 195⅓ innings and posting a 0.891 WHIP, all among the MLB leaders.
Those numbers underscore his status as a true ace, the sort of pitcher every contender covets.
Sid Seixeiro recently shared an idea on social media that the Blue Jays should consider.
“What would the Jays have to give up in a trade with Detroit for one year of Tarik Skubal before he hits free agency?” Seixerio wrote on January 14th, 2026. “He’s won two straight Cy Young awards. Clearly, there are financial issues between him and Detroit.”
“Jays are all in for 2026. Why wouldn’t you look at that?”
From Toronto’s perspective, adding a bona fide ace like Skubal could significantly bolster a rotation that’s shown flashes but lacks a true #1 starter. His track record of sustained success, including back-to-back Cy Young awards, would provide immediate impact for the Blue Jays’ postseason aspirations.
Skubal is Worth the Price of Admission
Although only one year of Skubal is guaranteed in a trade, the Blue Jays could also offer him an extension.
An extension for the Cy Young winner would cost the Blue Jays more than a pretty penny. ESPN insider Jeff Passan recently speculated that Skubal is aiming to make MLB history.
“Tarik Skubal, the aforementioned best pitcher in the world, is the two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner,” Passan wrote on January 8, 2026. “He is entering his sixth season with the Tigers and is in his third and final time through arbitration before reaching free agency, where he is angling to become the first $400 million pitcher in baseball history.”
Can the Blue Jays afford a $400 million starting pitcher? Perhaps the better question is: how can they not afford it?
The Skubal Ripple Effect
As if things weren’t in flux already, a Skubal addition would send things into overdrive.
For starters, Toronto would need to consider what assets to package together to acquire Skubal. Berrios’ name has been floated around as a trade candidate this winter. Would the Tigers stomach his high price tag?
What prospects would they include in a deal like this? They could offer multiple pitching prospects who are close to making the MLB roster or have recently gotten their first taste of the big leagues. Ricky Tiedemann, Bowden Francis, Gage Stanifer, Johnny King, and Yesavage all fit this description.
If prospects are traded rather than someone presumed to be on the rotation, things get even more complicated. Adding Skubal puts them at seven arms vying for a spot on the rotation.
That means moving someone like Ponce and Berrios to the bullpen. However, moving two starters to the bullpen is not a great recipe for success. Moving just one of them is more likely, assuming there are no suitors for Berrios. The closer the offseason gets to Spring Training, the more likely a Berrios trade becomes.
One way or another, adding Skubal should be a strong consideration for the Blue Jays. If the price of not making the trade is another “runner-up to the World Series champions” ribbon, then they should pay the price.
